New Iraqi Flag

Recommended Posts

The design has two parallel blue lines which represent the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and by extension Iraq's Sunni and Shiite Arabs. The yellow line represents the Kurds, while the crescent is a symbol of Islam.

Apparently there are plans to make the shades of blue darker, out of concern for similar colors to the flag of Israel.

I like the symbolism of the flag, but wonder if it will "stick".

'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life

New Iraqi Flag

I wonder what was wrong with the old flag?

At one point if I remember correctly, (and anyone please correct me if I am wrong), but good old Saddam changed the original flag a few years back so that it contained some writing on it, which I can't remember either...:S...But in essence, the original flag had been changed, and I was under the impression that it would just be returned to what it had been before Saddam's regime. I guess not...B|

Imagine if a bunch of foreigners came into America and decided to change our flag...

This is not a good idea.

Let 'em keep their old flag, if that's what they want.

Here's the link where I got the latest update, and the pic -- http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,118419,00.html

It wasn't us that changed it, but the interim authority. Personally, I think it would be better for them to wait until after an elected government is in place next year.

As for the old flag (attached pre and post 1991), here's the descriptor from CIA's World Fact Book:
"Flag Description: three equal horizontal bands of red (top), white, and black with three green five-pointed stars in a horizontal line centered in the white band; the phrase ALLAHU AKBAR (God is Great) in green Arabic script - Allahu to the right of the middle star and Akbar to the left of the middle star - was added in January 1991 during the Persian Gulf crisis; similar to the flag of Syria which has two stars but no script and the flag of Yemen, which has a plain white band; also similar to the flag of Egypt which has a symbolic eagle centered in the white band."
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh

I agree. This might just stir even more "nationalistic" resentment to the coalition.

Fear not, I'm sure we'll be disagreeing again very soon. The world will return to its natural balance. :D:P

LOL - I'll fix it right away.. ;)

So, if you are sensitive enough to understand that the flag issue can cause problems, why can't you see that the "blazing gun" tactics applied by the US military in Iraq is counter productive ?

Because, people respond differently to symbols, versus actions.

Flags are an issue even the US, and whether or not someone should be allowed to burn it or deface it in protest. While I would have a very poor opinion of any scum-sucking-motherf**k*r who would do so, I believe they should have that right.

The flag issue with Iraq is important, if premature, because it will be representative of their new emerging national identity. The US and the coalition will play a role in the evolution of that identity through our actions, regardless of the flag, and regardless of whether said action is "right" or "wrong".

The symbol/action idea is no different in Fallujah. Internal security forces arrange for a cease fire, and what happens, they do the exact opposite. The symbol of their desire for non-aggression is betrayed by their actions to the contrary.

A new flag for a new start is a good idea... but I don't think now is the correct time to introduce it. It will only alienate those Iraqis that oppose the coalition and will probably cause more violence. I believe it should have been left until after we had withdrawn our troops. In fact I find it hard to understand why time and effort was spent designing the new flag when there are so many other problems which need immediate attention.

its not THAT similar, but i really think they should have stayed with the traditional red black and green which are an arab symbol for nationality (red) and Islam (green & black)

anyway, our flag is much nicer B|
