Gawain 0 #1 April 23, 2004 Louisiana May Ban 'Low-Rider' Jeans Friday, April 23, 2004 Associated Press BATON ROUGE, La. — People who wear low-slung pants that expose skin or "intimate clothing" would face a fine of up to $500 and possible jail time under a bill filed by a Jefferson Parish lawmaker. State Rep. Derrick Shepherd (search) said he filed the bill because he was tired of catching glimpses of boxer shorts and G-strings over the lowered belt lines of young adults. The bill would punish anyone caught wearing low-riding pants with a fine of as much as $500 or as many as six months in jail, or both. "I'm sick of seeing it," said Shepherd, a first-term legislator. "The community's outraged. And if parents can't do their job, if parents can't regulate what their children wear, then there should be a law." The bill would be tacked onto the state's obscenity law, which restricts sexual activity in public places and the sale of sexually explicit items. Joe Cook, head of the American Civil Liberties Union's (search) Louisiana chapter, said the bill probably does not meet the U.S. Supreme Court's standard for the prohibition of obscene behavior under the First Amendment (search). "What about a woman who is wearing a bathing suit under her garment or she has something like a sarong wrapped around her and it's below her waist," he said. "I can think of a lot of workers, plumbers, who are working and expose their buttocks ..." I especially like the ACLUs characterization in the last paragraph! You can't make this stuff up. I don't necessarily agree with the law, but I do agree with the "ends". Pull up your f**ki*g pants damnit!!So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! lawrocket 3 #2 April 23, 2004 I'll agree. I'm sick of seeing it, too. Dudes who use their belts to keep their pants down. The ones who have pants at their ankles and boxers to their nipples. THe ones who wear their wallets by their knees. While I dont' agree with making a law about it, perhaps they should make it an affirmative defense against assault charges for guys like me who want to be on a "Pants-Up Posse." My wife is hotter than your wife.
cvfd1399 0 #3 April 23, 2004 I am in Baton Rouge and a Officer. I am happy to see some acknowledgement about stopping it. It is just another tool to put on our tool belts, who knows if it will really get enforced. It makes it nice tho when a punk walks up to you poping off at the mouth and acting a real ass you can use it. It goes the other way too, you can say.. look guy there is a law(ordinance whatever) against it, but I am going to let you go on it. Hopefully that guy will see officers in a better light and help us out maybe in the future. It has saved a few of us. It makes it real nice to let jimmy go one day on lowrider pants charges, and come back the next day and have jimmy tell us where a guy ran in the neighborhood. StevePhelps 0 #6 April 23, 2004 Personally, I'm not a big fan of the pants below my butt cheeks look, but I hardly approve of a law to enforce it. Geesh! What's next? Fines for fat people wearing spandex?

PhillyKev 0 #8 April 23, 2004 QuoteDoes your ass hang out of a burkhas? No, but if a woman's elbow was showing in Taliban ruled Afghanistan, that was against the law. What's the difference? IMO, anyone who tries to legislate against exposure of the human body is only doing so because they can't control themselves when they see it.
Malfunction 0 #9 April 23, 2004 What is going on in that South belt of Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia? First there was the No Women Self-Mutilation in Atlanta- Then there was a guy going to jail for questioning the court system in Jackson County, Alabama- Now this ridiculous law in Louisiana. Florida - you are next... oh, wait, you were first with that Jeb Bush thing... Texas, your turn to be stupid! I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

No, I don't think Texas will follow suit, the attitude you cite though certainly carries a risk of migrating north to Arkansas and Mississippi hasn't taken its turn yet either. cvfd1399 0 #13 April 23, 2004 Get real focus on the topic we are not talking about religion we are talking about 13-17 year olds running around with their ass and crotch being exposed. 17% of the time it is done for sexual reasons See for yourself. I found thousands of site of people complaining about this. The main focus is on indecent exposure, the clothes are the reason it happens. poll site
PhillyKev 0 #14 April 23, 2004 No, we're talking about sexuality and the human body. "indecent exposure" What is indecent about the human body? Why is exposing any part of it indecent, except in the eye of the beholder because of some ingrained religious belief? I could find thousands of sites of people complaining about the Jews, should they be outlawed? What really bothers you about it? What is offensive about it? Don't you have the same parts? Is it jealousy or desire? Why does it matter? Let people do what they want. Getting outraged over seeing the human form is solely based on religion. Otherwise you'd be dressing up your pets. Should men that remove their shirts in the heat be arrested as well? Where do you draw the line. This is a goofy and useless law. Maybe they should focus more on the homeless, drug use, poor sanatation, etc....someone in hiphuggers is illegal? Hmmm...then they go to jail where they are not allowed to wear belts and their pants will hang low anyway! cvfd1399 0 #18 April 24, 2004 13-17 year olds are showing their ass. Period. IF they were to keep their shirt over their underwear and their ass in their pants there would be no problem. What would you do if your kid was hanging out at the mall walking around with his underwear showing, and everytime he bent over he showed his ass and knew it? this does not happen on accident QuoteSeriously - if this is an issue for kids - maybe the parents should take care of this instead of the law. That is why we are here today wasting our time talking b/c they did not do their job.

I remember my elders bitching about how I dressed at the same age, as did my grandparents did about my parents, etc....this is a time honored tradition of the previous generation bitching about the next. So they are showing their underwear? wow, thats terrible. They show their stomachs as well, plumbers show their cracks, tank tops show clevage, people on the beach show farrrrrrr more..... If the girls are showing their bathing suit under their clothes, would that make it better? I was just in LA last weekend - seemed like there were a few other issues that state should concentrate on first. Horny teenagers showing skin or underwear shouldnt be a priority_________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... cvfd1399 0 #22 April 24, 2004 It's not the wardrobe it's the abuse of how they are wearing it. Alcohol is fine if it is used correctly, but if it is used in the wrong way it is not.

So she we take away that privelage and make them walk around naked? If we legislate away the ability for gangsta thugs to dress like gangsta thugs and slutty girls to dress like slutty girls, how do we identify them? Personally, I want to see the gangsta thugs coming so I can avoid them, and the slutty girls, so I can say hey.
ScottishJohn 25 #25 April 24, 2004 I think there are a lot more serious crimes that the police should be concentrating on rather than being fashion police. fashions will change and the youth will probably start wearing something else in a few month and that trying to enforce a clothing policy is a waste of time. We were all young once and many of us probably wore stuff that makes us cringe now as adults. Will we keep having to amend the law if fashion changes or should we be a bit more tolerant in what people wear.---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you think my attitude stinks you should smell my fingers
