Imagine if more people were like our current administration? ----------------------- EXXON VALDEZ CAPTAIN CLAIMS "NOT RESPONSIBLE" FOR OIL SPILL Blames liberal media for taking things out of context (CNN 4/1/89) - Joseph Hazelwood, captain of the Exxon oil tanker that ran aground in Alaska causing at least 2.8 billion dollars of damage, reiterated today that neither he nor his crew bore any responsibility for the accident. He denied recent allegations that he had warnings before the disaster occurred. "Were there things I might have done differently had I known we were going to run aground? Sure. We would have moved heaven and earth to avoid that shoal. But there was simply no way that I, or any member of my crew, could have known what would happen." The new controversy centers around a recently-released transcript of a phone conversation between the captain and Third Mate Gregory Cousins, where Cousins told Hazelwood "we are off course and headed towards shoals. Navigation reports we may run aground." Critics of the captain claim that he did not do enough to head off disaster after the warning, and that he remained in his cabin the entire time. "Did I receive that briefing? Absolutely. Did it tell me exactly which shoal we would hit, what time we would hit it, or where on the ship the first impact would occur? Definitely not. Did anyone tell me 'Hey Joe, we will surely hit that shoal, and lots of oil will leak out?' Of course not. It was historical information of a technical nature; us sea captains get such reports all the time." "And look at this chart," he continued. "It doesn't show the exact shoal we hit, it just says 'shoals.' Neither I nor any member of my crew had any idea we would have hit that particular reef at that particular time, or that it would be so jagged." "It's the damn liberal media again, trying to assign blame, as if that will bring all those animals and tourists back to Alaska. Look, it was nobody's fault, OK? I certainly did nothing wrong by staying the course that had already brought us dozens of miles from our port in relative safety." Hazelwood noted that he plans to continue operating oil tankers, and that his experience in staying the course should make him a perfect choice for operating the massive and difficult-to-navigate ships.
