North Korea says standoff with US at "brink of nuclear war"

The Japanese WILL NOT back down. Simple as that! Actually, take into account that the Japanese valued family honor above all else and would commit seppuku when shamed or to avoid shame on one's family, however, despite "westernization" there has been a rising tide of nationalistic beliefs that harken back to the days of WWII and the "old ways" and old beliefs.

That is true, but when it comes to the threat of nuclear war, the Japanese seem a bit jumpy. I don't think the people in Tokyo faired any better than those in Hiroshima, but it still sits in their memory.

late reply, but my reply:
i did not study Japanes or Korean mentality. i simply lived there. so i just repeat a point still important: Koreans and Japanese have nothing in common. with a "Japanese one" i simply mean a Japanese.

i remember one small detail in the very first year of living over there: at a dinner table (that was in Hongkong), i mentioned (in German) to other Germans beside me: they simply look the same, all of them! what a silly statement.

the Japanese (one) in front of me, capable to understand and to talk in German, replied in a gentle but very serious way: do never compare us (Japanese) with them (Korean). there is more than just one universe between them and us. Japanes and Korean have nothing in common.

this guy from Tokyo still is a friend of our family. he still mentions the same. Japanese look "down" to Koreans. i know this specific since 20 years.

i do not know which kind of studies regarding Japan you made. i just talk about my own experience living in the FE. in another forum at Speaker's Corner, i was talking about FE where i used to live for so many years.

this is becoming a little off-topic now.

i still feel sure, that NK is a danger which should be considered as a serious one.

I would think older Japanese look down on Koreans as their slaves. During WWII, Koreans were killed or forced into slave labor by the Japanese. Thousands of women were were forcefully transported to Japan to serve as prostitutes or "comfort women" to returning soldiers. Japan stripped Korea of its forests and natural resources.Children in school were forced to learn Japanese; never to speak Korean. Funny, a lot of Japanese history is missing from school books. Sorry to change the thread.

They can't reach CONUS yet, or even Hawaii, but they can launch over Japan. Kim's biggest threats are "raining fire" on Seoul and the ability to reach Japan with at least a few missiles.

I wouldn't want to get into a game of one-ups-manship with an egomaniac. Especially when he doesn't have any small guns, but his biggest gun is as big as mine.

I would suggest considering Japan's best interest, seeing as they are the only ally we have who lives up to their agreements.

I don't think most Americans realize that South Korea had 2 army divisions, marines, and civic action personel in Vietnam at our request. They left well after all American ground forces had gone home. Some of those kids went home in a body bag. These people are our allies.

After all, does NK even have a missile delivery system that can reach the US?

News reports from about a year ago claimed that North Korea has missiles capable of reaching the California coast.
