Kennedy 0 #1 April 5, 2004 I think this goes here. "ATF DIRECTOR . . . Attorney General John Ashcroft has announced Carl J. Truscott will serve as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), joining the Bureau from the U.S. Secret Service. “Carl brings strong leadership and immense law enforcement expertise to the Bureau as they work to combat crime and protect the public,” said Attorney General Ashcroft. “ATF plays a crucial role in our work to fight violent crime, and I am confident Carl will assist ATF in achieving this and other key priorities.” Prior to his job in the Treasury Department as Assistant Director of the Secret Service, Mr. Truscott served as the Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division, where he had primary responsibility for supervising all protective matters relating to the President, First Family and the White House." Does anyone remember when the ATF was just another section of the department of the treasury? They were tax collectors for shit's sake. Now they are just another agency for knocking down doors and screwing things up on a national level. ps - they still have some legitimate functions, however these are frowned upon as stealing funds from "useful" purposes (see Waco, Ruby Ridge, et al.).witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

TheAnvil 0 #3 April 6, 2004 Dude, I'm 99% sure that ATF is in DoJ. Now Secret Service is in DoT. Odd thing about those levels of management. It's not really that necessary to have a thorough knowledge of the subject area prior to taking charge. Sean O'Keefe is one of the best administrators NASA every had and he's a far cry from a rocket scientist. At those levels, it seems to me that the ability to grasp both political reality and reality itself in conjunction with the organization's stated purpose, assets, and infrastructure is far more important than experience in the department itself.Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!! Kennedy 0 #4 April 6, 2004 ATF was created under the Treasury. The "new and improved" BATFE was put under the DOJ when everything was rearranged post 9/11.witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
TheAnvil 0 #5 April 6, 2004 Ahhh...probably a better place for it. I'm not really a huge fan of the post 9-11 reorganization, truth be told. That seems to be a good by-product though.Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!

Not that odd really, you see the same thing in pretty much all organizations, both private, public and government.
TheAnvil 0 #7 April 7, 2004 Just the larger ones. More intriguing than odd I'd agree. That's why micromanagers aren't really the folk of choice for some managerial/leadership positions.Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!! SkyDekker 1,465 #8 April 7, 2004 QuoteJust the larger ones. True, those that have a management structure of some size in place. My job entails managing people who are experts in their field, ranging from security to boiler operations, certainly not things I am an expert in. Whether I do that in my current job or in a completely different field, really doesn't make much difference.
