Lots of fun but only marginally effective for anything besides putting holes in paper.
Tonto 1 #54 March 25, 2004 At 500 yards a 160 grain 7 mil Rem Mag has more than double (1545fp) the muzzle energy of a 240 grain .44 magnum.(740 fp) At 800 yards it's still got more zap than a 240 grain .44 Magnum with the barrel gently touching your chest. If you really beleive that's "marginally effective for anything besides putting holes in paper" then most anti personel sniping aficondo's will disagree with you. I agree that 800 yards is not 2365 yards, and that an 18 inch (3 shot) group from an 800 grain .50 BMG round at that range is a whole new ballgame, but those applications are more anti-materiel than anti personel. (Besides, at those ranges a 20mm would do the trick far better.. like this South African product...) If you're going to do something, you may as well do it properly. tIt's the year of the Pig. Amazon 7 #55 March 25, 2004 Uh Tonto dear can you run down to the store and pick one of those up for me... I have a friend in Eastern Washington that likes to go ground squirrel shootin....it certainly looks like a good varmint rifle to me.
 Tonto 1 #56 March 25, 2004 Wonderful toy, isn't it? It doesn't have the tack driving capability of a .50 BMG, but putting one of those rounds a few inches wide isn't going to make much difference.. tIt's the year of the Pig. Hell, if they had, the Federal Agents would have come out far worse.
 JohnRich 4 #58 March 25, 2004 News update: Sale of 'sniper' rifles banned "In an emotionally charged meeting Tuesday, the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors voted to prohibit the sale of .50-caliber 'sniper' rifles in unincorporated areas of the county. "Board members reiterated their position that the ban on the large-caliber rifle sales is an important step toward protecting the community. They have pointed to the damage the rifles could do to such industrial targets as refineries, telecommunications towers and railroad cars." Full story I particularly liked this part: "Contra Costa has only two gun dealerships, and neither one sells .50-caliber rifles." So they've banned something that wasn't even sold there anyway. Wow - what an effective crime-fighting law this will be! Ah, but what really counts is that they "feel good" for having banned some guns... Ohhhh.... Ahhhh.... And let's just keep it a secret that .30 caliber rifles could do similar damage to those targets, so that these geniuses don't get the idea to ban those too.
