Calvin19 0 #1 January 14, 2007 In febuary of 2006 i had a pretty bad paraglider crash, with sever injuries to legs and head. I now have 1 good ankle, and one bad. head pulled through (the doctor sais, its argueable) on the bad ankle, i have had to get the 4 small toe tendons severed due to their tightening up and crimping my toes. i had a zeeplasti on the big toe, and while it helped a lot, it still have a lot of pain in my toe when i walk. what i am wondering is, how much will i need my toe for balance? does anyone have a severed toe or cut toe tendon? I want to ask my doctor to cut the tendon to the big toe so i can walk comfortably again. this is not a dissability, i know, but i saw a buch of other injury posts, and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or advice. peregrinerose 0 #2 January 14, 2007 Have you talked with a physical therapist regarding your question? That would probably be the best place to get some information. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
Calvin19 0 #3 January 14, 2007 I have talked to my doctor for the past year about it, and 4 different phyisical therapists. the test for the muscle that controls the toe was only 18% effective. so, yeah. im just looking for other people who may have an amputated or cut toe. dorbie 0 #4 January 31, 2007 That's a big move, my dad has no toes on one foot (coal mine accident) and no big toe support very much affects your walk. He has insoles to help etc. and obviously there is some support from a shoe but it is not near the same as the full support a big toe gives you. Do not sever your tendon except as a very last resort. Look at your footware insoles etc. first. Cut your big toe tendon and you will walk with a limp, but I guess your doctor has already warned you of this. He also gets calluses on the ball of his foot, you may not with your toes still there, but do consider that you may just move the problem. Heck some people with normal tendons get calluses there, don't assume that there's a better outcome here by modifying the intact parts you're left with. Don't be in such a rush, you'll have to live with this decision for decades, take a few years to think about it & work on the problem.

steveorino 7 #6 February 5, 2007 One of our skydivers lost his big toe and 2nd toe in an oilfield accident. He wears a protstesis in his shoe. No problems that I'm aware of. steveOrino
SkyChimp 0 #7 February 11, 2007 Uncle-in-law of mine lost his first 3 toes to his right foot to a lawn mower. He says his balance has never been right since. I'm sure everyone is a case to case basis so don't give up. Does anyone else find it funny that we made a SPORT out of an EMERGENCY PROCEDURE?!?!
