FlyBabeAU 3 #26 February 6, 2015 I sew- a LOT. Home dec, garments, Quilts, bags with many layers and thick bulk, repairs to backpacks or outdoors stuff at times. I'm not a rigger. From even a sewer's perspective if you want to sew any kind of bulk and want it to last, run as fast as you can away from that Janome. There are a lot of modern machines on the market and not all of them are built to handle bulk or heavy sewing even in the domestic context. Many aren't even capable of functioning as door stops. If you want to sew canvas or denim or stitch through cord or webbing you can find domestic machines that will handle that when you use an appropriate needle. I run modern or vintage Berninas for most of my sewing and we're talking handling thick quilts, bags, or sewing up to 16 layers of denim, but the machines I use unless they are vintage or classic era models are also way over $400. Check out old Husqvarna, Bernina, Pfaff, some Singers if you are interested in a domestic machine. Be aware if you go the ebay route you may well end up needing to cough up for a service to get the machine to sew properly, a lot of junk goes through ebay in "working" condition that isn't, and do have it checked out for electrical safety- some old beasts need re-wiring to be safe. Some sewing machine dealerships sell preloved machines that have been checked out and fixed up, worth a look as they sometimes have some warranty on the labour, and you can test them before you buy. A good resource to check is Pattern Review.com where there are thousands of reviews posted on machines. Not all sewers have the same needs, bear it in mind when you are reading. Feel free to PM me if you want.
masterrigger1 2 #27 February 6, 2015 Max, i know this is probably way out there for you, but..... this is the same machine that Rags uses at the Symposium.he just made a small folding table for it. It is just a straight stitch but is one of the best canopy machines IMHO out there. http://www.ebay.com/itm/201279168955?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2661&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT MEL ...and someone needs to get this machine. It is a great nail driver. It will sew 5 cord if needed, but will sew e thread just fine as well.It is a Singer 144W-10. It has a 10 inch throat. http://www.ebay.com/itm/131417949784?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITSkyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
mcordell 2 #28 February 6, 2015 If skydive orange is the right dropzone, then this shouldn't be terribly far in Richmond. http://richmond.craigslist.org/hsh/4860541288.htmlwww.facebook.com/FlintHillsRigging
