Altitude withdrawal!

Recommended Posts

I haven't jumped since New Years eve and am desperate to jump again! Was real poorly until beginning of feb, had a car accident so couldn't jump and then just when I am clear to jump again, trust the good old British Isles, the country has an outbreak of god-damned Foot and Mouth disease and the DZ gets closed - typical! So, instead, I've come to read lots of people who are getting to jump talk about it instead - a mild help! :)

From what I hear its not mad cow disease but a virus which is emenslly contageous to pigs cows sheep and all other mammals which have two-toed feet (feet with two toes)
The poor gits get blisters and swelling of the feet and tongue, hense the name foot and mouth, and the virus can stick to the tyres or motor vechiles and be caried around, so alot of movement in and around farms has been restricted to prevent it spreading. Nuff said.:S

If you are really hard up for a fix, go to www.perriscam.com That may help. Its realtime skydiving from Perris Valley. It gets me through work on a summer day and weekends like this where we are getting 3 feet of freakin' snow!!!
"I'll jump anything!"

Cows get diseases and dropzones get closed? Am I missing something or does Britain have 1 too many laws?

I don't live in Britain but this is the way I understand it. They have lots of farms with livestock in the country and around lots of the DZ's there. The dropzones are asked to close incase of the event of an off landing. This disease is airborne and so easily spread that if a jumper has the virus on him and lands in a field, any livestock that enter the field can get it. Even without direct contact. Even cats and dogs wondering the countryside can spread it, even though it does not effect them, or humans.

Well ever since we humans started "agriculture" and "farming", we have been messing around with momma nature, and sooner or later it is gonna come back on us... Don't get me wrong - I love a big meaty dinner, but it just seems to go against the nature of the planet - raising animals for slaughter... I hope you folks on the other side of the Atlantic aren't grounded for too long because of this hideous outbreak...

Has also meant lots of cows, pigs and sheeps have had to be burnt and then the ashes buried cos its supposed to be the only way to stop it spreading! All horse races, army training, country hiking, stuff like that have been banned! So, not only can I not jump, I can't run around the countryside like a mad-woman with my rifle! (i'm a sergeant in the Army cadets)

Nah it's not mad cow disease. It's a VERY infectious viral disease that affects animals with cloven hooves. Sheep, cattle, etc. The virus load to start infection is VERY low therby making it incredibly infectious. F&M rarely actually kills animals but it leaves them in a somewhat run-down condition and therefore nearly worthless in the meat and animal byproducts arena. They get killed because of the worthlessness and NOT because of the disease. Having said that we have to keep in mind that the farmer may have spent a goodly amount of resource on feeding that animal up only to have it come down with F&M. Now the farmer has to spend as much again, or more, to get the beast up to marketable quality. Usuallky it's cheaper to buy another cow or whatever and shoot and burn the sick one. Given feed lot farming shooting and burning is much more humane than letting the animal live till it's deemed edible.
I s'pose you've all realized that I'm vego...:-) and I can't see for the life of me why we have starving millions on this planet when we feed around 40% of our vegetable food to cows so we can kill ';em for the meat. Remember a kil0 of prime steak takes about a months grain based feed and presents the food value of about a cup of wheat. The original grain could have fed a starving African family for quite some time. Days or weeks and NOT just part of one meal.
Should have brought a rig with me when I climbed on this soapbox. It's bloody high...:-)

I haven't made a skydive since the end of October '00!!! I sold my rig and have been traveling for work and haven't had the time! However, watch out this weekend, cause I finally get to go up again! See you all on the 13th floor...

13 is my lucky number

13 is my wife's lucky number, too
(well - not "lucky" - maybe "significant" is more appropriate)... she was born on the 13th, married on the 13th, and the list just goes on and on... today is her birthday!!!
