Dirtsucks 0 #1 March 6, 2001 Why the hell not? This is my first post ever on DZ.com. I’ve been on the forum for several weeks now and love checking it out after work and seeing what’s new. I made 7 aff jumps 2 summers ago and have been desperately wanting to continue and become an official skydiver, and it’s driving me insane. I hate being broke, damn it! It doesn’t really matter right now with like 80 feet of snow on the ground (I’m in Minnesota) but if I don’t jump as soon as it’s warm I’m going to commit myself to the looney bin. Anyway, it’s been great reading all the great skydiving stories you all have, it’s made my life at 0 AGL slightly more tolerable. My friends all think I’m crazy so it’s good to find people to I can relate to. Blue skies, and green grass (sorry, I haven’t seen it in almost half a year). freaksister 0 #2 March 6, 2001 damn you should have called yourself "snowsucks" lol! i thought life in the panhandle of texas sucked, but at least we only get 20 inches of snow at a time instead of 80 feet, hahaha...the fact that i live 300 miles from a dz doesn't even sound so bad anymore, i would definitely think minnesota would suck worse! my heart goes out to ya! move down south and come jump with us! maybe you will get to jump again this summer...keep us "posted" haha stupid pun, i know! sis

Dirtsucks 0 #4 March 6, 2001 I should have seen the beer thing coming! And Freaksis, 300 miles?!?! I’ll never bitch about driving an hour to get to Baldwin, WI (my closest DZ) again.! But I’d still do it if I had to. Ya got to have your priorities right? I’d really love to move down south and jump all year, but it would be just too hard to leave my friends and family behind (whuffo’s or not). I definitely think a vacation is in order though! Dirtsucks 0 #5 March 6, 2001 BTW, I know that Skydive Hutchinson, about an hour and a half west of me is open year round. I’ve always wondered how it’s possible to jump out of a plane in winter without instantly freezing solid, considering the 120 mph wind chill. Anybody know, how they do it? My JM told me of a story about a guy jumping in the winter in a red jumpsuit around Christmas and getting stuck on the roof of somebody’s house, right next to their chimney. I don’t know if it was really true but I would have loved to see the look on the face of the person who found him!
mattb 0 #6 March 6, 2001 OK - Minnesota doesn't totally suck. (I'm from there and felt obliged to throw that in.) However, I think Chicago is rough this time of year and I got 3 jumps out of an Otter in pleasant 45 degree weather this weekend. I'm hoping to get up to visit my parents a couple times this summer and definitely want to check out the area dropzones. Let me know where to go around there . . . -mb
freaksister 0 #7 March 9, 2001 I just saw a picture in the new Parachutist of a snowman somebody built at Hutchinson. It said the coldest day they jumped this year was 3 degrees above zero on the ground. ouch!300 miles does suck, by the way, HARD ASSsis
ColdDuck 0 #8 March 22, 2001 Hey I know what you mean. I am from Hutchinson and its true they do jump out here on weekends during the winter. Supposedly if cover up its not that bad. I was talking to one the DZO the other day when they were jumping I would guess it was right around forty degrees out and she said it was beautiful up there no gloves or nothing. However I believe you must have a license to jump out here during the winter i.e no AFF jumps. which sucks for you and I. But I think you should definitely come out here this spring, there are quite a few jumpers out here that come from the cities.
Iflyme 0 #9 March 22, 2001 QuoteI just saw a picture in the new Parachutist of a snowman somebody built at Hutchinson. It said the coldest day they jumped this year was 3 degrees above zero on the ground I jumped here (Victoria) on Dec 4th when it was -16c (or 3f) at altitude... just around freezing level on the ground... it's not too bad if you have good gloves and dress warm! Hell, I'm never too aware of temperature 'till I'm under canopoy anyway!Frank
Dirtsucks 0 #10 March 23, 2001 Yeah, I'm going to try and come out as soon as I can at least to do a tandem. Gotta wait awhile for AFF, though, till I get the dough.
ColdDuck 0 #11 March 23, 2001 Once again I know what you mean. I started my AFF last fall and then I ram out of money and good weather. So now I have to start all over again but oh well. I think starting over might be the best thing me for anyway (that last statement was the booze talking I swear)
Dirtsucks 0 #12 March 23, 2001 Last statement was booze talking huh? Gee, wouldn't know anything about that:) But anyway I got two priorties, right now - 1. getting the money, I can do that. 2. getting the balls to get out there. Seems strange, but I'm actually kind of nervous about it. Wasn't really nervous about my first jump, but I am about what will be my 8th. I really don't get it. But it doesn't really matter, I'm jumping, end of story. I've kicked myself in the ass every single day since Aug. 25, 1999 when I pussed out on what would have been my last jump. I didn't know what determination was till I first said "F..K IT ALL" and jumped (more like fell) out the door of a Twin Otter for the first time. And I'm going to to it again, don't really care about anything else whatsoever, school, friends, family. It may seem cold hearted, I really care about all of them, but I need to jump. And I will. I've thought about every day since and especially since I found this forum. It may take a little time, but I'm going to be a skydiver damn it!! if it's the last thing I ever do!!Gonna jump with you all! - Josh
BarrettJ99 0 #13 March 23, 2001 Take control of your life and move to southern California. I'm sure there's enough of us out here that you could bum a spot on a couch till you sort out the logistics of where to live. 3 DZ's within an hour drive is the way to go. That and the weather will never do you wrong. So get out here!!!Blue skies-T1
