Hellian 0 #4 March 29, 2001 Well i suppose in theory i'm still a s/l student having done 14 jumps, but my 6 months since my last jump is up so i would have to do a FJC again, if i don't get to do AFF this summer, i will do s/l at uni, but i will do AFF/me keeps telling himself that :o)Ed
Jeji 0 #5 March 29, 2001 AFF student here!!!! I have to redo my L-3 since I went way over my 30 days due to weather, etc. We are going to be moving in about 2-3 weeks and as soon as the last box is moved, I'm at the DZ to hopefully just knock it out in a weekend! gman 0 #6 March 29, 2001 I'm at AFF#4...again, and again, and again. I've repeated this level so many times that the school has put me in the frequent flyer club(I get a discount for level 4 jumps). The strange thing is that whenever I get into a nasty spin, I start telling myself "hey, it's not that bad, I kind of like this sensation". I tell the Instructors "I'll keep jumping until I get it right or until I run out of money". Anyway, I'm doing another jump this Saturday and hopefully I can move on to #5.-G.M.L.-
SpeedRacer 1 #7 March 29, 2001 I don't know if this is an east coast thing or what, but most of the DZ's that I've seen don't do static line or even IAD at all. On their websites they seem to imply that SL is "outdated". And what are these "ten second delays" or "thirty second delays" I keep hearing about? This website is the first place I've heard of them. Does that mean you freefall for ten or fifteen seconds before pulling, so that you jump at lower altitudes, or what??At the DZs that I've been to, all of the jumps, even first jumps, are made at full altitude (13-14000 feet). Most people do a couple of tandems, then (if they're going to stick with it) it's right into AFF. Personally, I just skipped the tandems; my very first jump was AFF1 at 14000 ft.Speed Racer"Blue Skies, Red eyes, Sore thighs!"
Zennie 0 #8 March 29, 2001 OK, I'm cheating a little here, but I'm off student status, but I hope I always consider myself a student. You can never stop learning. Never stop asking questions... even after you have your "D".------------Blue Skies!Zennie
Grogs 0 #9 March 29, 2001 QuoteI'm at AFF#4...again, and again, and again.Hey gman, I think you'll find a lot of people have had this problem. I know of a couple at my DZ, and I have seen (I think) 3 people here on DZ.com talking about the same problem. Here's my advice (the same advice my DZO gave a fellow at my DZ after his 5th Level 4 jump): Go visit a wind tunnel. I see you live in California, so for the price of 1 or 2 level 4 repeats you can go to Las Vegas and spend 10-15 minutes in the tunnel (the equivalent of at least 10-15 jumps!). I think you will also get much more out of it too. You can have someone critique you and get you fixed in a low-stress environment. Everyone I know who has done this passed Level 4 the next time through.
Pammi 0 #10 March 29, 2001 QuoteAnd what are these "ten second delays" or "thirty second delays" I keep hearing about? This website is the first place I've heard of them. Does that mean you freefall for ten or fifteen seconds before pulling, so that you jump at lower altitudes, or what??That's part of the progression in IAD Speed. You move up in altitude and the amount of time you freefall after you pass each level. For instance, I screwed up my first pull after my two practice pulls, redid practice pulls then did it again. Then went to 10 sec freefall, then to 15, screwed up the second one (my low-pull), did another hop & pop, then back up again to 15-20 secs, etc. I didn't friggin get freefall til about 6 jumps ago from altitude! (only 10,000 at our dz). I honestly wished I'd have done AFF, but oh well, hindsight!Gman, as you can see from above, I've had a time of it also on my progression. Stick with it! I have had a bitch of a time with spinning also :/ I've had them taped twice just to try to narrow down what the problem was, which was in the beginning feet-up-a$$-syndrome, then not pointing my toes, etc, etc....the REAL problem it turns out is I get so worried about starting another spin (which doesn't bother me anymore but pisses me off) that I don't relax enough! I'm so flat and stiff that the slightest thing with my legs and there I go! Check this out...they finally said (only a few jumps ago!) "forget that for now...we're going to do a diving exit (kick ass bud!) and you're gonna do flips. We'll get those out of the way." Guess what?? After that front flip (didn't ever get over backwards...kept throwing my head back, it was hilarious, but never made it over..hehe...didn't bring legs in enough ) but after the front flip I was so friggin stable and not spinning at all!! It was so fun I just relaxed right back into it rock steady! Now that I've felt it, I feel so much better about it and I know that will help me not spin next time. The thing is, the more frustrated you get and the more you want to get over doing something wrong, the harder you try and the worse you do cuz you ARE worried about it :/ They even make me 'close my eyes and try to sleep' on the way up to altitude cuz they say they can just SEE me thinking too much!Sorry, this was long, but I feel for you...I really, really do!! You'll get it! (just don't pull a dummy like me and low-pull trying to stop the spin...when you're spinning the altitude seems to disappear sssooo fast!)Blue skies!Pammi
lummy 4 #11 March 29, 2001 Gman. You never mentioned if you're doing video on your AFF's. IF you aren't I highly recommend it. There's nothing like being able to pop the video in and see exactly what is going on. When I did AFF, I hade video on each jump. Afterward, my instructor and I would sit down and review it. He could not only tell me what I was doing wrong, but show me on the screen as well. It's not very expensive either. MY DZ only charges $30 for AFF video.Gary, the other GML
