skreamer 1 #1 April 5, 2001 FOOT-AND-MOUTH BELIEVED TO BE FIRST VIRUS UNABLE TO SPREAD THROUGHMICROSOFT OUTLOOKResearchers Shocked to Finally Find Virus That Email App Doesn't LikeAtlanta, Ga. (SatireWire.com) -- Scientists at the Centers for DiseaseControl and Symantec's AntiVirus Research Center today confirmed thatfoot-and-mouth disease cannot be spread by Microsoft's Outlook emailapplication, believed to be the first time the program has ever failed topropagate a major virus.''Frankly, we've never heard of a virus that couldn't spread throughMicrosoft Outlook, so our findings were, to say the least, unexpected,''said Clive Sarnow, director of the CDC's infectious disease unit. The study was immediately hailed by British officials, who said it willsave millions of pounds and thousands of man hours. ''Up until now wehave, quite naturally, assumed that both foot-and-mouth and mad cow werespread by Microsoft Outlook,'' said Nick Brown, Britain's AgricultureMinister.''By eliminating it, we can focus our resources elsewhere.'' However, researchers in the Netherlands, where foot-and-mouth has recentlyappeared, said they are not yet prepared to disqualify Outlook, which hasbeen the progenitor of viruses such as ''I Love You,'' ''Bubbleboy,''''Anna Kournikova,'' and ''Naked Wife,'' to name but a few.Said Nils Overmars, director of the Molecular Virology Lab at LeidenUniversity: ''It's not that we don't trust the research, it's just that asscientists, we are trained to be skeptical of any finding that flies inthe face of established knowledge. This one flies in the face like a blinddrunk sparrow.''Executives at Microsoft, meanwhile, were equally skeptical, insisting thatOutlook's patented Virus Transfer Protocol (VTP) has proven virtuallypervious to any virus. The company, however, will issue a free VTP patchif it turns out the application is not vulnerable to foot-and-mouth.Such an admission would be embarrassing for the software giant, butSymantec virologist Ariel Kologne insisted that no one is more humiliatedby the study than she is. ''Only last week, I had a reporter ask if thefoot-and-mouth virus spreads through Microsoft Outlook, and I told him,'Doesn't everything?''' she recalled.''Who would've thought?''/s[drop till you party!]

miked10270 0 #3 April 5, 2001 I'm "pretty" sure that Foot & Mouth isn't spread by MS Outlook Express... I heard it was a code problem with early versions of Windows (just like every other virus known to man). Apparently it affects beasts 'cos they don't have the ability to get "critical updates".Then again I also heard that the disease was originally political... As in "Every time the Agriculture Minister opens his mouth, he puts his foot in it"!Mike D10270.
