Jessica 0 #1 April 24, 2001 Corking? Funneling? What do they mean? I've picked up a lot of lingo since I started this foolishness but I can't gather the meanings of these two from context clues.
lummy 4 #2 April 24, 2001 I'm not the expert, but my understanding is is that Corking is a freefall term when you shoot up relative to the other freefallers, kinda like a cork under water will shoot up.Funneling is a RW term for when a a part of a formation falls apart and goes low.How close am I? SkySlut 0 #3 April 24, 2001 corking is popping up on a formation. For example, say you are in a group doing some sitfly or headsdown and you screw up and get flat for some reason...you pop up like a rocket compared to the formation. The bad thing with this is that someone may be above you in some fashion and there is a possibility that you could hit them. That would be bad.Funneling is getting in someones burble. When you hit the burble you fall into them. Say that you are launching a 4 way exit and someone isnt presented in the relative wind, but instead they are right on top of a teammate. That causes you to fall into them, thus causing a mess. That person that you fell into may have a grip on someone and then it just dominoes from there. Everybody seems to fall into each other down the middle...and there you have it...a funnel.-Slut"I'll jump anything!"
Slowfaller 0 #4 April 24, 2001 corking was described to me as when, for example, 3 ppl are in a head down dive and one of them loses it. that persone goes on his/her belly and "corks" because of the drastic deceleration.as far as funneling i think its when you exit the plane when its turning so there isnt really any foward speed, but dont quote me on it.blue skies, cold beerchris

SpeedRacer 1 #7 April 24, 2001 Corking is dangerous because when people fly head down they do 170 mph, but belly down they do 120 mph. So if a group is doing head down, and someone is beneath someone else & transitions to belly-down, (s)he can smack into someone above at up to a relative speed of 50 mph (170-120) (assuming they completely decelerate to 120 before impact) Actually of course its the head-down person above who smacks downward into the belly down person. But to the grooup it looks like the belly-down person just popped up like a cork in the water.Speed Racer
SkySlut 0 #8 April 24, 2001 Ever see the South Park skydiving shirt??? "You flat bastard! You corked Kenny!!!" Fairly entertaining...-Slut"I'll jump anything!"
cloud9 0 #9 April 25, 2001 Corking is taking the cork out of the bottle. Funneling is what you do with the contents of the bottle after you get the cork out. Hic Some fun eh!

Learn how to really work a sit-fly and flip back into sit and kartwheel back into sit, ext. so that when you try headdown, when you mess up, you can easily transition to a sit so as to prevent corking. Bottom line is, if you mess up freeflying, STAY SMALL! Corking can be very dangerous. I wanted to go straight for head down and my boyfriend, instead made me follow a progressive pattern.
