lazerq3 0 #1 April 30, 2001 Went out yesterday to make acouple fun jumps and on my last jump for the day had my first snivel. I just transitioned from R/C to hand deploy and from a Navigator240 to a Spectra 190. WOW what a difference!!! That Hand deploy is soooo much smoother on opening. however on the last jump I looked up ans saw a ball of chute. I saw the slider so I figured it was just a snivel but I went for the handles anyway and started the count. Sure enough a couple seconds later she sloooooowly opened. I pull at 3500 so I had some time to wait for her!! But still it was a little spooky for me, but I guess thats just skydiving!!!! It was just nice to know that even though it wsnt a mal my mind went right to "ok get ready for possible emregency proceedures". All in all it was a nice day for jumping and a learning experince.jason

Iflyme 0 #3 May 1, 2001 I had my first big snivel the other day, too. Dumped right after exit at 10 grand to follow some of the CReW folks around the sky, but it took a bunch of seconds to open. Just because I was sub-terminal I guess... I knew I was wayyy up, so it didn't bother me too much, but one of the CReW guys who was watching me said he was thinking "Frank has issues to deal with..." The ride under canopy turned out just great - I'm liking this CReW stuff more and more...
Stacy 0 #4 May 1, 2001 isn't CRW great? =c) I never truly appreciated what a parachute can do until I had someone standing in my lines and climbing on my risers. =c) and you learn to expect off DZ landings a lot. =c)Stacyhttp://astro.temple.edu/~sweeks
lazerq3 0 #5 May 1, 2001 I guess my only concern right now is that if a stupid little snivel spooked me what the hell is a mal going to do? Owell I'll say it again,,,,guess thats just skydiving!!jason
wingnut 0 #6 May 1, 2001 i know what ya mean about crw. i got to partake in some a few months ago and it was awsome. flying so close to another canopy was wierd!!! wish there were more people into it here where i live. there probly are i just don't have the money to drive hundreds of miles to do it.....i'll work on my freefal skills for now........"if dreams are like movies, then memories are like films about ghosts"-counting crows
Pammi 0 #7 May 1, 2001 CRW is awesome! I got to try it with my coach for my graduation jump! What a nice thing for him to do..really made that jump special and memorable! I have to say, I'm hooked! It was amazing seeing the canopy come up under you and try to sit on top of it. Woulda been better had I been able to pull it off...didn't quite get to the bi-plane we had planned, but now I got something else to work on! SkySlut 0 #8 May 1, 2001 At what altitude were you sitting in the saddle at??? It could have been a number of things. I remember when I got off student status, I was so used to fast openings that when I got my own rig I had the same thought. Some people pack their mains to open in over 1,000 feet. Different strokes for different folks...but I would recommend getting used to what you main is doing and learn how to pack it so it does what you want it to do. Do what is comfortable for you, I would hate for you to see you get rid of a perfectly good "soon-to-be" canopy because you didnt give it a chance to open. Another thing that you can do to open that badboy up is pull on the risers and assist the slider down a bit. Just be careful not to release any of the toggles while you are pulling on the risers. That would put you into a spin, and if you are under a highly loaded high performance canopy, and cause line twists and then you would have to really chop it!!!! Tee 0 #9 May 1, 2001 Quote I guess my only concern right now is that if a stupid little snivel spooked me what the hell is a mal going to do? At least you know that you have the proper emergency procedures drilled into your head, even if you are spooked. That has got to make you feel good. Being that I jump a Sabre I pack about an 800 ft. snivel. One time on a 4 way jump though, it was a quite windy, with even stronger gusts. And on video, you can see my canopy snivelling in the distance, but because the snivel was so long, the wind actually carried me across the sky, but towards another jumper. Very dangerous.....so keep that in mind on windy days if you have to pack a snivel. Tee
