At 5 grand I deployed my main. The reserve immediately deployed into the main. At most there was a second between the main opening and the reserve opening. Cause of the reserve opening is still unknown.

What type of rig were you jumping?

It was a rental rig, a Dolphin container with a spectre 210 main. I don't know what kind of reserve. There was no cypress, no RSL -- eliminating these as causes of the two out. I had two jumps on the same rig on Friday, 3 previous jumps on the rig that day. Another jumper was sharing the rental with me and jumped the rig twice on Sunday.
There was a reserve pin check on the ground prior to this jump and the pin was seated firmly and correctly.

Wow. Those were the two main candidates (well, not a Cypres, but an FXC).
The only other things that I can think of are that shifting around in the plane might have moved the reserve pin, the reserve closing loop broke or the reserve pin broke.
Regardless, that's just freaky. Glad you're OK.

mike,
youre story is amazing, and a true lesson. Youre ability to concentrate, to realize and try to correct what was wrong.... It all shows what a clear head we must have to be able to save ourselves in times like that. I am so glad that you are okay. To your wife: im sorry that you had to have a scare like that. I cant imagine what it would be like to have been in your shoes, not knowing what was going on until you got there and saw for yourself. Youre a very loving wife to be able to say "get back up there in the air!" or something similar to that.
So glad that you are still here to share your story with us

Mike you had my mouth open nad eyes wide as I read both accounts of your story. I am glad to hear that you are still with us and in good shape. Your story terrifies me and gives me hope at the same time. It is hard to hear that something like that could happen even if you do everything right but great to hear that if you fight like the devil you can come through all that shit. If you ever come to Perris I'll buy the beer and a jump for you. Live long and fly free, you and your wonderful wife deserve it.
