Know anyone who wears sunglasses when they jump-
or riders who: a) don't wear proper eye protection or,
b) only wear sunglasses or eyeglasses when they ride?
- Recent studies have shown that exposure to wind(forget sand, gravel, bugs, etc) at speeds in excess of 30kph cause damage to our eye surfaces and the "tear" reflex system.
- Brief exposures do not appear to have any long term effect, however, repeated exposures or exposures in duration exceeding 15 minutes cause permanent changes and damage. Exposures greatly in excess of 60kph cause permanent changes.
- The upshot of this is that eventually with enough exposure, the surface of the eyes suffers a sloughing of outer layers which cannot be replaced ever by our bodies. Given enough exposure, this condition eventually leads to (at best) a chronic condition requiring constant medication for fluid on the surface as well as topical painkillers to relieve the agony that accompanies this condition. In worst case scenarios, serious surgery is necessary which apparently still is only marginally successful in preventing the deterioration to milky-blindness.

Funny you posted this.
Due to driving on my motorcycle with only sunglases (instead of the visor, het i like the wind in my face) I now have teary eyes all the time, which (according to my doctor) can be permanent.
It's not too bad, and my vision is still 103% okay, but to everyone jumping (or driving a motorcycle) with something that doesn't shield your eyes correctly.....know the concequences..this is serious, and (in the long run) can seriously damage your eyes...
Cya,
Jarno
p.s. MAN i love this...the weather outside is great, low winds, blue skies (no clouds at all)...a wallet full of money, and a weekend of jumping coming up..!!!
