Doasfu 0 #1 May 17, 2001 Whoopee. I just had one of those snooty, "I'm better than all of you because I skydive" moments last night. A good friend of mine (and veteran of one jump) invited me over to play poker with some of his friends. I thought, mistakenly, that it would be more fun than sitting at home playing video games. I was quite wrong.See, my friend's a really cool guy, but he's in a fraternity. I don't want to offend anyone, but fraternity/sorority people aren't my usual social circle, and I was reminded of why. They were they most annoying group of gossiping losers this side of high school. After a few hours of very little poker and a lot of hearing people I don't know talk about "Theta Kis" and "Delt Sigs" and going on and on about the most minute, mundane details of their opinions on their other "friends" I was about ready to scream. We didn't finally start playing more than a hand every half hour untill I quietly gathered up all my change and headed for the door. When one of the guys asked where I was going I said, "I don't know any of the people you're talking about and we're not playing poker so I'm leaving."Ugh. I could go on, but I'm just ranting. Sorry of the off-topic post.Dan
Emma 0 #2 May 17, 2001 Wow. Didn't know fraternity/ sorority things actually existed outside of American teen movies. How surreal. Do they really CARE about this bollocks? Is it like on Cruel Intentions with Sarah Michelle Geller? (I'm sure that's the one....)Or, for the older among you (he he)...St Elmo's Fire (truly a classic 80s flick...with some classic 80s flick-hairstyles...purrrrrfect)Emma
wingnut 0 #3 May 17, 2001 emma, the frat, soroarity thing can be just like in the movies!!!!!!!! not all are like it but with so many in the states there is bound to be the "stereotypical" frat out there!! come to think of it two of my ex-girlfreinds are in sororitys, i always did like thier parties though!!!!!!!! nothing says college like a frat keg party!!!"if dreams are like movies, then memories are like films about ghosts"-counting crows
pyke 0 #4 May 17, 2001 I can relate to your plight, Doasfu.I have some friends who have been in frats and they were my friends before they went to school, so little changed. But, others became friends after school and hearing what they did and how they did it is very disturbing. Basically, they are friends with their "bros" and "sis's" because mummy and daddy didn't want them to be lonely, so they bought them friends. Awww, isn't that sweet.I personally never had any inclination to join one for pretty much why you hating your evening with your friends. This tradition runs in my family. My dad exacted revenge on his frat for his rush nightmare week and then turned his back on all that crap. It is amazing what you get from your parents.Sorry to hear that a night with the "guys" turned into a knitting circle. Puts "guys" in a bad light!Kia Kaha,PykeNZPF A-2584
Doasfu 0 #5 May 17, 2001 QuoteWow. Didn't know fraternity/ sorority things actually existed outside of American teen movies.Oh yeah, they're real. And they're pretty much annoying as hell. This wasn't a big keg bash or anything (I wouldn't have touched that with a ten foot pole) but it was just a group of people all of whome, other than me, were in a fraternity... and boy were they unpleasant. I don't even want to talk about the sorority girls that came over... shudder.Dan
Doasfu 0 #6 May 19, 2001 Well, for those of you who are eagerly following the "Dan hung out with some frat guys and it wasn't fun" thread, here's an update:I was talking to my friend, who's invite it was, for the first time since we played poker. Anyhow, offhand he asks, "Did you have fun playing the other night?"I don't know what happened, but the "lie politely" section of my brain was in severe malfunction. My response was, "[long pause]No. Not at all. Sorry."What an ass I am. :)Dan

Zennie 0 #8 May 19, 2001 QuoteMy response was, "[long pause]No. Not at all. Sorry."What an ass I am.Did you explain to him why you didn't have a good time? If a person doesn't enjoy something, I'm more apt to be understanding if they tell me why.Just a thought.------------Blue Skies!Zennie
