Point Break DZ?

Recommended Posts

Just saw it again on cable. OK, we all know how realistic the skydiving scenes were in that movie. However, the location was beautiful. I did some research and it seems to be Lake Powel, UT. Anyone been to or going to Skyventure Tunnel in FL? There is a pic from the movie across the door to the wind chamber. When I was there it seemed it had a different name for that lake on it. Does anyone know for sure where the 5-way footage was shot? I know some of the other footage was filmed at the Ranch (my home DZ) and the TM was also from here. The plane is a King Air that is now in Perris, I think.

I don't know about the picture at the tunnel but am going down for a camp there Jume 23-24. I'll check it out if you wish. If you can't wait that long hit their web site....George would most likely be able to tell you anything you want to know. george@skyventure.com
As for those fake freefall scenes...those were bad, but the movie where the guy lands on the target with his rig packed up and neatly underneath him after he cuts away and doesn't pull his reserve...THAT takes talent and skill!

Well, actually I wasnt talking about the 5 minute free fall time. If you consider that there was 5 of them then one can strech it and say it was OK. It was great skydiving cinematography though, no doubt. I was talking about jumping from 4K without a rig and catching the other guy, talking in free fall etc. "Pull! No, you pull! No, You first!" Gimme a break! Haha! That was a good comedy sketch that made me laugh.

That King Air used to fly jumpers at Perris, but after it landed wheels up a couple of times they sold it. The first wheels up landing was a mechanical failure, the second was pilot error. Now all the airplanes at Perris have their wheels welded in the down position.

New landing gear for a King Air: boatload of money
New props for a King Air: boatload of money
Labor costs for installing both: yet more boatloads of money
One welder with 25 minutes and an acetylene torch: Priceless.
There are some things that competent jump pilots can keep you from buying. For everything else, there's industrial tools and a a six-pack of Courage & Creativity.

PS Yes, I realize that riggerrob is pointing out that Perris has nothing but Super Twin Otters. I was just struck by the image of some frustrated DZO having his King Air landing gear welded into the down position.

If you thought that was good for a laugh you should check out the movie "fandango" with kevin costner. Its a little hard to find but the 90 min movie is worth the 20 min skydiving scene. ( and i use that term loosely!
