freeflyguy 0 #26 June 5, 2001 The pilot may understand a GPS. But if he doesnt know the winds are doing 50 miles an hour the opposite direction of yestereday, you are going for a walk. Our Otter pilot always posts the winds at 4 different altitudes, and knows what that all means. He is a good guy. Sometimes the first group out the door will question his spot, wait, and then go, making everybody else long. With him, when the light comes on, get out. Zennie 0 #27 June 5, 2001 Our DZ pilot is great (also the DZO).But I'll tell you what, the Skydive Texas pilot who managed to get his plane (and cargo ) down safely after a stall at ~800 ft. should get some sort of medal or something.------------Blue Skies!Zennie
Dutchboy 0 #28 June 5, 2001 GPS didn't exist when I learned to fly either, but it is easy to use. It is also easy to tell the winds aloft using GPS.The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
Dutchboy 0 #29 June 5, 2001 He didn't get the airplane down safely, and it was only 200-300ft. Have to ask the skydivers involved if they got down safely or not.The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
Zennie 0 #30 June 5, 2001 Well I'm even more impressed. A stall at 300 feet and he got it down with no fatalities? I don't know how you define "safely", but under those circumstances there isn't a whole lot of room for improvement.FWIW. Every post that I've read from folks who has first-hand knowledge of the incident said the pilot performed a semi-miracle.------------Blue Skies!Zennie
Dutchboy 0 #31 June 5, 2001 That's cool. You said he got the plane down safely, and it was pretty well destroyed, so I wasn't sure what you definitition of safe was.The important thing is that there were no fatalities. Planes are hard to replace, but it is possible. The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
