DC Area DZ's

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for feedback on dropzones in the Washington, DC area. So far, I've only been to one, Skydive Delmarva. I've liked it, but was looking for the old "compare and contrast" from people that have been to other area dropzones as well. Some of the ones I've been considering simply for variety are:
SD Orange
SD The Point
SD Virginia
SD Suffolk
Chambersburg Skydiving Center
Parachutes are Fun (in Salsbury)
If anyone knows the strong points of these other DZ's or things to watch out for, I'd appreciate the feedback.
Thanks!
Justin

Hey jfields
I live in Bethesda, MD.
I usually jump at Skydive the Point in West Point VA, which I believe is the oldest DZ in VA. Great people, some old timers there with some cool stories about skydiving in the 1970's. Carol (the Queen) Clay jumps there, she's got over 13000 jumps now. They have a Twin Otter. Bunkhouse, showers, school w/rental equipment.. Lots of fun to party with, a real friendly family aptmosphere. Mostly RW people, but there is a smaller regular crowd of freefliers.
Once I went to Skydive VA in Louisa. Smaller DZ & Smaller airport/landing area. No showers or toilets (Spot-a-Pots). They have a King Air. Nice people there too!
Haven't been to Orange, I hear they have more freefliers there, plus they are rumored to be the most naked dropzone on the east coast. At Crosskeys they have direction signs pointing to different DZ's around the country. Under the sign for Orange, VA it says "(the naked people)"!!
I think it really sucks that we have to drive so long to get to a dropzone (usually at least 2 1/2 hrs, with no traffic). There's an airport in Gaithersburg & I wish they'd open a DZ there. I work in Gaithersburg & I would be able to jump after work!!B|

I've never been to either one, but from what I've hear other people tell me, West Point is primarily RW and Orange is primarily freefly (which explains the nakedness ;)). Not to say nobody freefly's at West Point, or there is no RW at Orange, just that's what is most common. Both fly Otters.
I've been to Skydive Virginia (Lousia) and it's a fairly small, close knit, friendly DZ. I've only been there once, and I ended up doing a 4-way and 3 9-ways, so I was able to find quite a few people to jump with. They fly a king air.
Suffolk is my home DZ, so I'm a bit partial to it. We're a bit bigger than Louisa, and have a few more facilities. Lots of fun people to jump with. We're also one of the test beds for the new ISP, so that might interest someone who's on student status. We jump a King Air, plus we have a Casa down about once a month during the Summer. On the down side, it's at about a 3-hour drive from D.C., which is further than any of the others you mentioned.
