OmriMon 0 #1 June 12, 2001 I was just watching the news and saw this Israeli dude doing a BASE jump in some kind of new-age wingsuit.Any body heard anything about that?Free Skies,Omri
FallDown 0 #2 June 12, 2001 didn't see the piece your on about but i did see one recently about adrian nicholas doing a wingsuit jump off of kereg(sp) a while back. awesome footage, i'll keep an eye out for that footage you mentioned though. what did he/she go off by the way?jeff

Zennie 0 #4 June 12, 2001 Yuri Kuznetszov does it. I think Troy Hartman has done it (or at least plans on doing it -- he talks about it in interviews & on his website).Anyone here wanna take bets that in our lifetime someone comes up with a wingsuit that you can actualy land sans parachute? I bet they will.------------Blue Skies!Zennie

OmriMon 0 #6 June 12, 2001 I heard this dude that holds the record for the longest wingsuit jump (forgot his name) saying that he first wanna take off with a wingsuit and after that maybe try and land one, sounds cool.Free Skies,Omri

FallDown 0 #8 June 12, 2001 zennie was right. i was asking what object. mucho thanks for the clearing up there zennie. the guy you mention omri ( the longest freefall record holder) is the same guy i mentioned above. the BBC did a documentary on him and the jump last year. he got two records on the jump (i think) the furthest horizonal distance traveled in freefall and the longhest freefall ( time length, not hieght length which is still held by john kissinger(sp)

FallDown 0 #11 June 12, 2001 zennie i virtually garantee someone will land a wingsuit with in my life time. i know that jari and adrian are both working on the idea and i believe that the latest version of the birdman suit, the skyflyer has been tracked with a vertical speed of just 18mph, which is BLOODY slow. i also heard about a month back that apparently the skyflyer and the VX46 have been flown side by side for a short period, only a few seconds but it was apparently a totally controlled thing. Now thats would make for some awesome footage!jeff

pyke 0 #13 June 13, 2001 Not that this is terribly factual...but I remember reading an article on wingsuit jumping and they were saying that they have plans to make a wingsuit that will stall out at a certain angle (in hopes that it will eventually equal that of a ski jump landing field) so that one can fly the wingsuit and land on a slope that is gradual enough to ski down.......thus eliminating the need for a parachute at ALL.so, to answer the question...will it happen in this lifetime....I can see it!!! They are already half way there (in theory!)!!!Cheers,Kia Kaha,PykeNZPF A - 2584

mccordia 74 #15 June 13, 2001 Although wingsuits radicaly bring down the vertical speed, it (and correct me if I'm wrong) does increase your forward speed a lot. When someone would create a wingsuit to land with (one that could maintain almost zero vertical speed for more then a few seconds) you would probably still have to run at about 60 to 100 km/h to land safely. And imagine someone missing his landing-slope, or flairing/stalling half a second to early or late....Two Dutch guys from my DZ are going to attempt a triple Dutch record later this year. They'll be jumping from about 49.000 ft (from a balloon) with wingsuits, and in the process will hope to break the Dutch Altitude record (highest skydive) and the record for the Highest balloon jump in Holland (almost the same as the first record, but something different according to the Guiness people), and the (Dutch??)record for the furthest distance travelled in freefall.I'm not sure excactly how far they will fly, but during a freefall with wingsuit from 49.000 you could definately cover some serious ground...Those guys will just land under their parachutes though :)Anyone know the current wingsuit/distance traveled in freefall record??Greetz,JCp.s.Or perhaps, to land it, we could add wheels or skids to a wingsuit, a tail rudder, flaps, controls and perhaps make it from metal...:)

FallDown 0 #17 June 13, 2001 mcordia, the distance traveled in freefall record curently stands at 10ish miles. i think. it could be km but i think its miles.
SkymonkeyONE 4 #18 June 13, 2001 There is a REAL plan in the works to land-launch (BASE) a Skyflyer BirdMan suit and fly about under the power of two nine-inch ducted fan engines like you would put on a large-scale radio controlled model jet. They showed a video of the concept at the CSS Easter Symposium and Boogie. It will be a joint BirdMan/Atair undertaking. The 9" motors generate 85 pounds of thrust apiece. Dan Preston, who is an engineer/inventor by trade (among other things) is building the mounting contraption and I believe Jari is the intended test pilot. Not sure when it is that they intend to make this happen, but both seemed very excited about it.Chuck

But they were also tracking at speeds of 100-120 mph horizontally. One can certainly land in a wing suit w/out opening a chute, but he will just as certainly will be dead. But it would be fun bouncing like a pebble on the water.
