fizinjen 0 #1 June 18, 2001 What an exciting weekend I have had. My boyfriend has recently taken up sky diving. Friday I decided to ride out to Sky Dive Monroe, where he sky dives and watch the sky divers. Later in the afternoon, I got a whim to try this "no perfect word to describe sport" they call sky diving. Yes, that is right, yours truly jumped out of a perfectly good airplane strapped to another person at 13,500 feet above the earth. On the ground I was tensed, not really nervous. It was the first time I had been up in a plane. The ride was better than the impression I got from the sky divers. I didn't mind the ride up; I remained calm and enjoyed the view. The sky divers in the plane were friendly. I could look out of the side windows and the door. There was a Delta flying 20,000 feet above and to the right of us. I could see thick white puffy clouds and the ground for miles. Then it was time...time to make the exit. Four sky divers exited the King Air and then my tandem master, Steve and I waddled to the door. And, THEN the nervousness and somewhat panic hit. "OH MY GOD!" I thought as I looked out and down and saw the earth through the clouds, thousands and thousands of feet below. I couldn't believe what I was about to do. We were in free fall for about a minute...what a rush! The adrenaline kicked in pretty quickly. We did a 360 turn three times during freefall. Steve pulled the chute and then I experienced the most awesome feeling and view ever. I could see the earth expanding miles and miles, endlessly. They say you can see Atlanta in one direction and Athens in the other. The feeling is just amazing...no word or words could describe being under canopy. The flight down was so graceful. I just wanted to stay under canopy forever. I loved being able to get in on the action of steering the canopy. We did a quick turn to the left and then a quick turn to the right. Next, Steve took the toggles from my hands and pulled completely down to the right...we did a fast spiral down and then to the left. What fun! Then, sadly it had to end. We had a beautiful landing, able to stand it up. I am so glad that I got the video and pictures. I would recommend any and everyone to try it. It's just breath taking. At first, I was somewhat taken back about the idea, but now I truly understand why my boyfriend and others want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. I can’t wait to do it again! First time in a plane and you didn't even get to have a full ride...mind you...they are HIGHLY overrated!!!And, so...aren't you going to tell everyone what you did AFTER you got home that night????? Well, still trying to actually get myself to fully believe that I did jump out of a plane earlier...I had to watch the video a couple times that night. Well, it was midnight and I was exhausted. I set my VCR up to record Farscape. I got up Saturday morning and the Sky diving video had popped out of the VCR during the night. Yes, I cannot believe it. "What an idiot!" I thought...I had recorded over half of my video. I called Wes crying my eyes out that morning. He said that there was a good chance that a copy would still be at the dropzone and he'd see what he could do. (what a sweetie). I managed to pull myself together and make it to work. I got a phone call around noon...I was so lucky that there was a copy still around.
