now this brings me to a question of my own...how many less deaths does the u.k. have compared to the u.s. when you factor in population diffences.? (deaths/jumps)
(from thread about frap hats)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer : I'm not saying this is fact, these figures are all recalled from last year when i was trawling through skydiving sites waiting to do my FJC.
In america there seems to see somewhere around 25-30 deaths a year. Maybe a little less?
In the past two years in england, 3 people total have died. (plus or minus one)
So that's 3 deaths : 50 deaths (over the 2 years)
Obviously a heck of a lot more people jump in america, but, i doubt it's 18 times as many. (50/3)
Anyway, wingnut, they are the rough figures, interpret them how you wish. Personally i think it's because in england people are usually less current due to the weather, and so, no-one hook turns.
Quite a few of the deaths in america are attributed to hook turns, (*****i am not saying either way for or against hook turns, as i have 14 jumps and i am not qualified to comment*****) But... nobody hooks in england, not really. At langar someone said 2 people hook, i've only ever seen one at Headcorn and that was from a visiting crw team.
Just my 0.02p.
Please don't flame me, i'm fragile and not fire-retardant!!

A couple of comments (A bit like you Hellian, I'm guestimating... but I've got some problems with your guesses)
Just 2 people hook in England??????
They must be shape shifters, coz I've seen more then that, and just at Langar.... (its been a while since I went to Hinton, the only other place I know in England, so I dont remember how many were hooking it there)...
And as far as the 18 to 1 ratio: how many biggish (LET, Caravan types) planes are there in the UK? about 8? then add about 20 cesnas? In florida alone, there must be at least 20 large turbines (Otter, King Air, CASAs, SkyVans...). Then add the little places like Perris and Skydive AZ (each doing about 100,000 jumps a year), and all these places running 12 month / year...
The 18/1 ratio might not that far off (maybe over, maybe under).
Plus, when dealing with small numbers, you need a much larger sampling (say a good year maybe 10 deaths, and the next, you get a plane accident, and your up to 32).

PS: a good year, statistically... in the real world, a good year would be, we all agree, 0 deaths.....
