RemiAndKaren 0 #4 June 26, 2001 You know what they say, with a few beers, everybody is everyone's brother!!!! especially when it comes to have a bro' who did a cool thing!!!!
SkymonkeyONE 4 #5 June 26, 2001 BJ Worth was definitely not the first person to BASE the Eifel tower, though he seems to be most remembered for it due to the James Bond movie. First one to do it with permission would be a better explanation.
skreamer 1 #6 June 26, 2001 I believe mooose was in fact referring to the movie (did he mean first ever or first base jump in the movie? - there was just the one). Either way, he was being bull-shitted and should learn to use the occasional comma! /sPS hey mooose, did you hear? I made my first wingsuit jump and landed the bastard! simo 0 #7 June 26, 2001 it's not fair i wanna base the eifle tower too, but i guess i'd do well to jump outta' some planes first, well that'll be fun too aaaaahhhggggghh peace
mccordia 74 #8 June 26, 2001 I have a nice video at home (taped from TV) from a Dutch guy who based the Eifel tower last year.He jumped from about 3/4 way up the tower (took the stairs up...shees, what a climb!). And if memory serves me well, there was a guy a few years ago who also base-jumped, but he did it from from the first floor/level, and broke both his ankles in the nice rough landing that followed. No running from the gendarmes (french cops..right?..give or take a few spelling errors)And these are just the ones I've seen on TV...there are probably plenty of illegal dives made from that old piece of junk (it was only supposed to stand there for a few months for the worldfare...but I gues they just forgot to tear it down..:)

SkymonkeyONE 4 #10 June 26, 2001 "it was supposed to serve as a radio tower for France (and still does!?)"That, and as a urinal for drunken idiots. Bar none, the nastiest "tourist" city I have ever visited (1983). Trash in the streets everywhere and snooty locals who made it a difficult experience to enjoy. Maybe it has changed. Any non-french people on here have a truly positive experience there?Chuck
FallDown 0 #11 June 26, 2001 from what i understand the bond people applied for permission to base the tower but were refused on the grounds that it was to dangerous. A brit guy then did it without permission and had the press waiting ( yes he did make good money out of it). after that the french authoriteies changed there minds and let the movie people do it too. i know a couple guys in to base them selfs who did it last christmas ish, and apparently its being done quite a regular basis.jeff
skymedic 0 #12 June 26, 2001 non french guy here, I was there last year for my honeymoon. I cant complain. people were cool(helps if ya know french) and the city wasnt too dirty. I thought it was a cool city just didnt like the fact my wife was sick with the flu our whole honey moon and that it was the worst cold snap in july there in history.(like 40-50 degrees everyday)marc
Michele 1 #13 June 26, 2001 Hi, ChuckShort answer: NO.I was in France/Paris twice, in '80 (family vacation) and in '82 (exchange student to Belgium). Both times, I felt as if I was being "barely tolerated", and only because I was a tourist and had cash to spend. Oh well, not a vacation destination for me! DZBone 0 #14 June 26, 2001 Actually, I was there on business in '92, and we had strangers come up to us to help when we were lost, even though we could barely communicate. It was my co-workers who were the obnoxious assholes (some anyway), but that's a universal truth, isn't it! hahaha! starzwithaz 0 #15 June 26, 2001 I totally agree. The parisians were "Snooty"? that's being kind.I found them to be down right A.. H.... Although I likened it to any large city like Manhattan. Everyone is business, business and rush, rush.It dosen't help if you are "American". According to the city likes, we are all rich and too clean. We actually take a shower everyday, imagine that!. Once we got out of town and into the country the people were Awesome. We actually ran into some old folks who thanked us (that would be the U S of A)for saving their A.. in WWI.If you ever go back, stay out of Paris. It will be doing all concerned a favor.Blue Skies and Sandy BeachesStarzwithaz

msdeva 0 #17 June 26, 2001 Paris definitely used to be snooty and dirty until about mid-90's. The internet generation has really changed things. It's now cool to be 'americain(e)'. I lived there in 1997 and found that the under 30 crowd was very cool - whereas the over 30 crowd is stuck in the stereotype. Fortunately, the under 30 crowd is taking over and the attitude of the city is changing. The Champs-Elysees is the cleanest street I've ever seen - they actually scrub the sidewalks every morning at 3am. As with any large city, there are always bad parts of town and not so nice people - but I found that the French are just like us - they shower every day, girls shave their legs, they'd rather party than work (which they actually do a much better job at than us) and aspire to be happy. If you haven't been there in the past few years - I would suggest reconsidering a trip there. It's really quite a beautiful city with amazing people. (The weather does tend to suck though!)
