VivaHeadDown 0 #29 June 29, 2001 If you want to accurately compare skydiving to driving, don't you have to compare the total number of miles driven to the DZ compared to the total number of miles you spend in freefall?
Grogs 0 #30 June 29, 2001 QuoteThanks, Grogs....It looks like I used a different number set that you did. Where'd you get the data? I must have missed something (I took mine from theNational Highway Traffic Safety Administration site). In the data set for sydiving, I used a median number (2.5 million) as opposed to your hardnumber (3.4). And it was a straight comparison of 100k~m/100k~j, rather than typical miles driven/number of skydives made. But no problem -I appreciate your correcting me - I can always learn. Thanks again - Ciel bleu-MicheleI got the numbers from the same place you did (I think?) - the NHTSA web site. I think you just missed a few zeroes on the number. The rate they quote is 120 fatalities per 100 MILLION miles. I just saw that figure that 2% of drivers would have a fatal accident each year, and it got me thinking. We should be seeing people dropping like flies with that kind of rate. In any case, no big deal. Never quote odds to a skydiver.
