Taking advantage of your whuffo parents...

Make sure you call and e-mail your parents regularly. Aside from maintaining a relationship with them, you can con them into buying you jump tickets when they come to visit. A good example would be this paraphrase of a recent conversation with my mom:
Mac: You've never seen me jump before, have you?
Mom: Just on video.
Mac: Why don't we go down to the DZ when you visit so you I can scare you to death?
Mom: OK, sounds fun.
Mac: Oh, wait... I don't think I'll have jump money that weekend.
Mom: Oh, well... if you need some...
Mac: Oh, no... don't worry about i--
Mom: No, it's OK.
Mac: Aw, I couldn't.
Mom: It's no big deal. Your dad and I can afford to buy our son a few jump tickets.
Mac: Really?
Mom: Yeah.
Mac: Wow! Thanks.
Mom: Sure.
Mac: Speaking of you guys affording things... I wanted to talk to you about my phone bill and rent...
They'll buy you eight tickets, I swear.

Thats how I got my last 4 AFP jumps taken care of. My MOM is the best (for a whuffo, though she has committed to doing a tandem since she went scuba diving with my sister)

My mom won't even watch the video from my first jump. She said don't tell her about it but call her after I go so she knows I'm ok. Then when she scoffed at how much I was spending on equipment I asked her, "Do you think I should just buy some cheap used gear over the internet instead?"...that shut her up :-) Probably could have milked some money out of her with that one if I was still young and poor.

If I could get my parents in the air, they'd probably buy new gear for all of us. I've seen families get into the sport together, and I am so damn jealous of those kids that get $6,000 dumped on them (including suit, helmet, alti, etc.) while I'm scraping to eventually buy a Cypres.
