Where to stay near Cross Keys?

Recommended Posts

XKeys folks:
Where is the best place to stay close to the DZ? I'll be coming in for the weekend (7/14-15) from northeast NJ and will probably stay over the nights of 7/13-14.
BTW, I'll probably be out the following weekend as well... Gotta love it when business trips turn into skydiving vacations! Hope to jump with you guys...
Thanks,
Dave

Plenty of room to crash there. There's a tent set up next to the parking lot for general use I believe as well. Or you could bring your own. If you want a cheap motel, you could probably find one when you get down here. If you wanted more upscale, I don't personally know of anything real close, but Atlantic City and Philly are both about a half hour away.

hehe. kev, that tent that youre talking about is danny's. we set it up back during the season opener back in the end of april. we havent used it since that first night. its not a general purposes tent, but im sure danny would say that he could stay there. its just that neither of us has thought to take it down. its in the middle of nowhere. id personally suggest setting up a tent right near the pool, behind the fence, near the compound. thats just my 2 cents

dz,
thats an easy one. if you work on the dz youre more than likely an independent contractor. at least if you do anything besides manifest. Im an I.C. and all skydiving expenses are tax deductable cause im spending money to advance my career. anything skydiving related from renting gear to buying tee shirts are all for 'work'. so i can write them off. lift tickets included.

We talked about this during our Coach Course last month. You have to go down to the County Clerk's office and file for a Small Business License (about $40 in VA) and claim that your business is Skydiving. You can then claim all you skydives (training) and gear (work related equipment) as tax deductions on your income tax. The downside is, you can only claim a business loss like that for 5 years, then you either have to show a profit, or declare your business bankrupt.

That may be true for your municipal and or state taxes, and possibly for NJ as well. But for federal there's no such requirement. You just have to show that the expense was required in order to make an income and that the expense serves no other purpose then for that job (ie. a carpenter can't deduct work boots because they can be used while not working, but a hard hat is deductible). One thing to note though is that if you have a second job, your deductions for skydiving can't exceed your reported income for skydiving. Also, if you're audited, you may have to show documentation from your employer/client that they required you to make those jumps or buy those items.

If you're not squeamish the Granada Motel is only $40. Don't worry, they will certainly have a vacancy.... or thirty. It feels like the kind of place that "Cops" is going to show up at any minute. In all fairness nothing like that happened when I was there. You might want to bring your own soap though.
