Hybrid Diving

Recommended Posts

Since I'm nearing the 100 jump mark, I've been thinking a lot about disciplines. I really like both RW & freefly. Unfortunately, I usually have to jump with a different goup of people to do one of the other (usually me, myself & I for freefly). I really don't want to give either one up, but I can tell that I'm just mediocre at both. My RW especially suffers when I take time to practice freefly.
This got me wondering if I might be able to collect a group of people who are into both and do hybrid dives. This seems like an up & coming discipline and would be a good way to keep you feet in both waters simultaneously. Be in the freefly part one jump and the belly part on another.
3D formations, with multiple points, to me seems the next logical progression in skydiving.
Anyone know of groups that do this regularly? Is this something that can accomodate varying skill levels or do you really need to be super-experienced to do it safely?

To be a freeflyer on a hybrid, you need to be a damn good freeflyer.. It's like nothing you've ever experienced before.. My first try to stand up under two belly flyers went to shit really quick.. Second was ok, but a hell of a lot harder than standing by myself.. Plus, if you cork, it's almost guaranteed that somebody is above you..
To be a head down flyer on hybrid dives, you either need to be able to fall VERY slow and stable, or be able to fly very stable(with some funky airflow) with a fast base..
I've only tried a few hybrids, and have never tried to go head down on one.. None were totally successful - but they were all damn fun.. :)Mike

Hey Zennie!
Seems like you have a dillema! Me too... I love to do both RW and FF, but have to jump with different groups of people to be able to do them! My RW suffers if I FF for a while and vice versa! Would be good to do some hybrid dives, but as Aviatrr mentioned, it's hard work!
I was on a 4 or 5 way RW dive recently, which funnelled BIG TIME, and ended up in sit, trying to get down to the formation (I use this term loosely...) which had literally dropped out of the sky. Ring any bells Skreamer??
I love the idea of being able to fly my body in any position and where I want - this involves RW and FF. Guess I'll just have to get used to being mediocre at both disciplines for a while and look forward to doing some really funky jumps later!
Have fun!
B.

Zennie....
Start small with you and two others. Exit a 3 way round but with the person doing the stand holding chest straps. As you level off the two who are doing RW reach over the person holding chest straps and link arms. Then the FF can pull it to a stand. You can rotate positions until all get comfortable doing both then branch out.
Like Aviatrr said they are a blast when they work and funny when they don't.

Hay Zen,,
Same boat here,, can barely sit fly stable,, RW and I'm usually the one gettin to low or whatever,, Jump at a small DZ and one thing we all do enjoy is track dives at sunset,, usually the last load,, need someone who can fly on there back out front ( usually with video in several spots ) and the rest of us chase,, as our group gets better there's barrel roles and other things we can do as a group to look forward to,, but it's been easy to get both RW and FF's to get that last load up for one more fun jump...
