jfields 0 #27 August 29, 2001 QuoteOne of my favorite stanzas is:"Thirty spokes meet at a nave;Because of the hole we may use the wheel.Clay is moulded into a vessel;Because of the hollow we may use the cup.Walls are built around a hearth;Because of the doors we may use the house. Thus tools come from what exists,But use from what does not."I love this shit. Zennie does. His comment is perfectly clear. JustinMy Homepage

SpeedRacer 1 #29 August 29, 2001 I like some of the Taoist stuff. But I have trouble knowing how to appreciate Zen, because I'm a pragmatist. I have to know that a philosophy is applicable in the real world. (Of course, I haven't spent a lot of time studying Zen so WTF do I know)That doesn't mean that I'm a "material boy" so to speak, b/c I can recognize that both Buddhism and Christianity are very useful for teaching you not to get caught up in the petty & selfish demands of your own body & the material world, and that you'll have a better & more meaningful life as a result. Not that I'm very good at actually doing that!!Speed Racer"Come up to my lab,And see what's on the slab!"

Zennie 0 #33 August 30, 2001 Hey Pammi,I'm a little more book-ish, so I'm not all that familiar with good Zen resources on the web. But, as promised, here are some books that would be good (besides Three Pillars already mentioned)."Everyday Zen", Charlotte Joko Beck"Zen Mind, Beginners Mind", Shunryu Suzuki"The Miracle of Mindfulness", Thich Nhat HanhI have a few others, but they're a little more heavy reading. These, especially Everyday Zen, are good books light on theory and good on practicality. And pyke, you might like "The Tao of Zen" by Ray Grigg. It's premise is that Zen is really Taoism in Buddhist clothing. It traces the historical roots of Taoism and Zen and notes the remarkable conceptual similarities. Very good read.FWIW, I don't really ascribe to any particular religion, although I gravitate toward the Eastern philosophies because I think they most closely match my temperment & view of the world. If you're into labels, I guess I'm more of a philosophical Zen/Taoist/Buddhist than anything. --------Zennie"I know the pieces fit.
