base jumping

[disclaimer] I have never base jumped[/disclaimer]
Ive read on a lot of base jumping sites and a very low but somewhat safe distance is 300ft. I did however read about a base jump at like 90ft inside a cathedral in Europe. Only one guy jumped while his buddy held on to the PC. It read that the sound of the canopy opening inside the building scared the crap out of the nuns and priests. They did not get arrested.:D

Not that I'm an expert but I have seen them from 200Ft with the chute being deployed out of the bag already. I consider that cheating. In the bag the lowest I've heard of is around 280 ft.

A couple of years ago when I hung out in base circles, they were getting into jumping construction cranes at 100', pilot chute assist. I've never done anything below 464'. Base jumping is scarier than regular skydiving, by far. Many more variables, much less time to deal with them...

Minimum height for BASE??? I have friends that do a 173 foot cliff, but they've been in the sport a while. Also, when you consider height, you have to consider landing area and alternate landing areas... it's not just the height factor. Oh, and you also have to consider whether you go stowed, hand-held, PCA, or static line. If you are really interested in the sport, I suggest going through the course that is offered by Basic Research. They do jumps with you, teach you about the gear (there are a lot of differences between skydiving gear and BASE gear), and they teach you how to pack (again, different that packing a skydiving canopy). They do have requirements on how many skydives you have... I believe 150. BASE is a lot different than skydiving though... you have to be able to make split second decisions... and there's no reserve... so you better have balls of steel. Good luck.

There is no minimum height for a BASE jump. I've put 80 lb dummies off an 50 foot bridge; the canopy opened and they landed under an open main. You can easily survive a 50 foot jump into water if you enter correctly. A well packed canopy in a direct bag will open in about 30 feet; at those altitudes, the length of the lines becomes a big issue.
If you're jumping over water or soft sand, with a slider-down BASE main and a direct bag for deployment, you can pick any altitude you want. Below about 40 feet you may not get a fully open canopy before you hit, but it will be decelerating you and standing you up. Of course, if anything goes wrong all bets are off, but that's true of BASE jumping no matter what the altitude.

It depends on your gear, the way it's set up, and the experience level of the jumper. The interpretation of a "safe" BASE jump will vary from jumper to jumper. The gear needs to be tailored to the height, as well. 800 feet seems like a safe BASE jump, but if you give yourself a few seconds of freefall, and are equipped with a huge PC and a tailgate, you'll be hurtin'. BASE jumps have been safely made between over 5,000 feet and under 90. Actually, I've BASE jumped off of a chair. There wasn't even enough time for the shrivel flap to come off, but I landed OK.
