Nostradamus Bulls&*t

Recommended Posts

DUH, GEE I KNOW IT MUST BE TRUE 'COS I READ IT ON THE INTERNET!! :o
I'm sure many of you have seen this stupid thing going around on the internet. Someone made up a verse that seems to predict the attack on the USA and claimed Nostradamus predicted it. I just heard on a call-in show on TV some idiot called in who actually believed it! The commentator responded that it was false but damn, you'd think after 6 years of internet bullshit people would develop at least a slight sense of skepticism about believing everything they read.
Of course, this is a demonstration of how the whole Nostradamus myth has always worked, even before the internet. A world event happens, and subsequent publications of Nostradamus' predictions play around with the translation, substituting words here and there, (in this case, making up an entirely new verse!) until it looks like Nostradamus predicted it.
Cecil Adams describes the situation pretty well here in an article written a few years ago. I've heard other analyses of Nostradamus that point out how people often point to the word, "Hister" as meaning "Hitler", but that in the context of the verse, Nostradamus is clearly referring to a place, not a person. And Hister was the old name for the Danube river.
Anyway, I guess there's no stopping stupidity.
