Slider Question

Recommended Posts

I have a collapsable slider with a pull toggle in the middle that gathers the slider to this point (i am sure you understand that!?!?) I have a method for packing for a quick opening which by all accounts is generally confortable without too much deviation from heading but sometimes proves to be a little rocky during pressurisation - basically it opens very quickly but seems to be in a mushy state before full pressurisation for too long - rocking backward and forward. My question is if I were to perhaps leave the slider partially collapsed - (thats partially! I am fully aware of the dangers of an opening with a collapsed slider) would this added air flow help with the more smooth pressurisation of the canopy. Would there be other factors to take into account as the slider is not now a uniform shape - as it is slightly bunched toward the middle - would this hamper the opening and perhaps increase the possiblity of a mal - I beleive this may be the case but wish to draw on others experiences & knowledge

In this forum, you will not get the benefit of recieving answers from the experienced riggers and Instructors who generally ONLY read the gear and rigging, and safety and training forums. Believe me, there are plenty of very experienced people who read and respond to questions there, that have absolutely no desire to sift through the general fluff of this forum. So, that being said, you are just better off placing it correctly, unless you want the opinions of some of the novices that regularly post in this forum who will, right or wrong, tell you what they think.
Yes, there are plenty of very experienced skydivers who also read the talkback forum (like me) who will help you out regardless of where you post it. I , for one, would rather answer it in that other forum so that if sometime in the future somebody else comes along and is looking for a technical answer to a similar question, they will easilly be able to find it in the place they would first think to look; namely, the gear and rigging forum.
My answer to your question: if you want to try and jump your main with the slider partially collapsed, then go for it. I have fucked up and jumped my main with the slider completely killed. It kicked my ass, but I walked away from it. If you have the centerline type of kill-line of the type common on the old Vipers, Spaces, and Alphas (the line pulls through a plastic push-button friction adapter), then you would be able to partially kill the slider. The main is definitely going to open faster as their is less air resistance, but to what degree, I don't know.

So you basically throw around terms but can't explain the meanings - would that be right??
I have only ever heard this term mentioned and every time I ask no one can explain it (I have only heard Americans mention it on all accounts) - anyone care to explain?

No, I think you're the one who needs to chill newbie.
"So you basically throw around terms but can't explain the meanings - would that be right??"

Um, excuse me? If you don't like the answer you get or the advice given, you can ignore it, and I'm sure if you would give Donna a chance to get back to you on it, she would be glad to explain. We don't like flamers here, you can take that crap to rec.skydiving.

*kiss* Ya know I love ya Skreamer!
You're right Hackey. And actually, it's not like anyone is obligated to answer or help anyone here. We're just damn nice people sometimes, or NOT :) I actually enjoy throwing around an odd word or two, and rarely know what the hell I'm talking about on any subject ;)
(PS...you think THAT is being 'not chilled'? Bwahaha! I think Merrick would disagree whole-heartedly on that! hehe)

Hmmm... let's see, Donna brought up the term "Slider Rebound," yet your comment wasn't aimed at her? Interesting there "Winston!" (Whatever the f**k that means)
Anyways, Slider Rebound, or more appropriately "Slider Stop Line Rebound," is a theory conjured up by Dave Brownell (dbTech on dz.com) on the occasional hard opening. It results in the slider prematurely moving down the lines a bit, thus allowing the canopy to be ahead of the slider in it's opening sequence..... Causing the occasional SLAM! Dave believes that he's developed a method that greatly reduces this problem (by like 75%). Some people think the entire theory is bullshit, some people think it really makes sense. I guess I'll form my own opinions if I ever get slammed!
That's basically it, if you'd like to know more, contact dbtech or simply do a little research, I'm sure you can find something. I know I remember seeing a small article on it in Parachutist a couple months ago.

(Donna you are evil!)

Yes. I'm sorry. I am evil. :)Sorry 3flier... I only said that as a joke. As Merrick said "slider rebound" is something dbtech came up with. He used to have a page describing it and his solution but I just looked and couldn't find it. I know he wanted to get a patent for it so maybe he is keeping it secret for now. It was all pretty greek to me anyway. A lot of people think it is a lot of bunk and it has become kind of a joke. It's not my area so I really don't know. He could be a genius and we might all be thanking him someday.
Oh... and ya... I do throw out terms I have no clue what are. :)Thanks Pammi, Hackey and Merrick!
