Where is the Freedom?

Recommended Posts

I realized that it was a Global post, in England if I noticed every thing right. Thats why I did'nt say call the USPA or the FAA. Thats why I said "If you have complaints about why there are rules then write the people who make them. " That could be the BPA or the Kiwi Lesbian Parachute Assiciation for all I know. All I wanted to get across in my post was, that before you start complaining about something, take some time to fimilarize yourself with the issue and see why the rules or recomendations are there before you go complaining about them. Most times its to pass on the leasons learned by people who came before you.

Thankfully its a small organization (1 member) that is lacking lobbying powers. If it was any more powerful, then the USPA could be in for some compititon. The KLPA makes its members do strange acts, and its these acts that are limiting its membership.

There are obviously more restrictions in the UK than the USA then.............. and most of you have taken me the wrong way - which i thought would happen - if you read what i put - I think the rules should stay and are a good thing I am not bitching about them - I was just asking if anyone felt restricted in anyway - which most obviously dont. The only way it seems to become totally free and have complete control is to BASE as BillVon says - why dont ya BASE............ it seems a shame to have to go to another sport to gain the freedom that we all start skydiving for - or perhaps many feel freedom and those who feel restricted do go off and BASE to find the freedom & control suited to them - its all relative I suppose..........
As for BASE - well I will leave that to a BLiNC of an eye............... it aint skydiving after all and this is a skydive board.............
I do feel freedom in flight - to freefly with my friends is one of the greatest things in my life .............. but after break off ...........I am back to being overlooked by big brother................

I don't find that. There are perhaps three legal BASE sites in the US that I know of, and one of those is full of rules now. In one of the stranger incidents, someone at bridge day 99 was telling me that I couldn't jump a 38 inch ZP BASE pilot chute, and started waving my own bridge day FAQ in front of me. (Which taught me that, if you don't want any rules, you shouldn't write any.)
Outside those three, you can BASE only if you don't get caught. In that way it's much _more_ restrictive than skydiving - at least in skydiving, you can jump legally; you just have to get away with pulling at 1500 (for example.)
But you can still do whatever you want if you're willing to work at it. Want to jump with huge objects? Go to Junk Day in Eloy. Want to open low? Go to Bridge Day (or even the Ranch.) Want to fly a tiny canopy? Go to Perris and borrow one (if you can talk anyone into it, that is.) You may not be able to do all this within a 2 hour drive, or for $20 a jump, but no one promised this stuff would be easy.

Well, it's skydiving from fixed objects. Same basic idea. Same basic gear.

Is this not the basic mis-conception that gets experienced skydivers killed when attempting to BASE????
Was it not in 1996 when a swedish skydiver (approx 3000 jumps) had the attitude "its like a skydive" when she frapped in Norway?

It's not a misconception that they are similar. The gear is remarkably similar - my first BASE rig _was_ a skydiving rig, because that's all that was available. Of course, back then, canopies were bigger and slower, and resemble today's BASE canopies quite closely. (A Pursuit 230 is pretty close to a Mojo 240, in terms of aspect ratio and opening speeds.) In both cases the objective is the same - exit, fall some distance, open a parachute before you hit the ground, and land safely.
That being said, being proficient at one does not make you proficient at the other, although it helps. Tandem is _very_ similar to freefall - you still need special training to be able to do one safely. (And strictly speaking, it is not freefall - it is drougefall.)
I fly paragliders, single engine planes, seaplanes, and parachutes. I BASE jump and skydive. There are similarities to all those activities, sometimes remarkable ones. Yet every single one requires specialized training to do safely. The mistake is not that there are similarities - the mistake is not realizing that the differences in each one (sometimes minor, sometimes major) that you must prepare for.

Heck, there are jumpers who have taken heavily loaded Sabres (with sail sliders) off buildings. That's as dumb as doing a water jump with 30 pounds of lead on, or taking a Stiletto into a stadium demo. You can choose the wrong gear for any skydive or BASE jump.
