NtheSeaOrSky 0 #1 November 9, 2001 Where can I find information on how to *safely* jump from a Piper Cherokee??? The concern we have is how to get me below the tail wing thingy. Not because it might injure me, but that it might render the pilot unable to fly!! Thanks in advance!
PhreeZone 20 #2 November 9, 2001 Hitting a stabilizer will do more then jusy make the plane in operable, it'll probally severly injure you, make the planes owner lose his plane and insurance money since its not on the list of approved jump planes, cause the pilot to lose his licence, and be a big pain in the butt for everyone. The othe thing you need to think of on a Cherokee is how your going to get the door open.I'f you looking for a jump plane for a demo jump, try to get something like a Cessna 172 or 182. A diving exit on those are not hard to do with the pilot reaching over to help hold the door open. If your family owns a Piper and you want free jumps, then you better get a lot of practice on the climbout and the pilot better be damn good at flying with weight shifting on the outside of the plane.Jump pilots are the better ones to ask, there are a few that are on here too.A rainy day at the DZ is better then a Sunny day at work
NtheSeaOrSky 0 #3 November 9, 2001 I KNOW it would injure me, silly, I was being a smartass (those of you who know me are shocked, I am sure!)! :-) We want to find somebody who knows how to do it....neither of us are great enough mathematicians to figure all the hoo-ha out on our own LOL. I thought here would be my starting place.
mountainman 0 #4 November 9, 2001 i bet that DiverDriver man would be great for you to ask. Shoot Chris an email. He seems like a great guy and would help you out, I'm sure.--------------click me for a good time
Dutchboy 0 #5 November 10, 2001 I wouldn't attempt it. For one, the Piper Cherokee is not approved for flight without a door. Openning the door in flight on this plane will seriously disrupt the airflow over the wing. The Piper Cherokee series might be great planes to fly, but they are not suited for jumping. The only safe way to jump from one of these is to jump from a Cessna instead. The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
SkymonkeyONE 4 #6 November 10, 2001 We used to own a Cherokee six which we occasionally used for demo jumps. We would squeeze five jumpers into it, but anything other than a "stack out" is not really feasible. The back doors are plenty long, but quite low, so you kind of roll out. Never had any problems getting near the horizontal stabilizer. There is an STC for flying without the back cargo door, so it's legal, just crowded.ChuckMy webpage HERE
Jessica 0 #7 November 10, 2001 Yeah. My parents were private pilots and we owned a Piper Cherokee. Great plane. It is indeed legal to fly without the back door. Alex wants to see you bleed.
Dutchboy 0 #8 November 10, 2001 Oh, that door. That assumes that you have the cargo door which the Cherokee six might have, but I've never seen it on the more common (and smaller) 140 or 160. No way you would want to try and open the cabin door though. The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
ROBERT 0 #9 November 11, 2001 I flew one and a former female friend jumped out. (she was a jumper...it was planned...I'm really a good guy!!!) The door being open definitly affects the handling of the aircraft. If you do it, do not get to slow, side slip abit, open the door, and go. Other than her being able to log it as a jump, it was not fun. We did not do it again.
