"A man has died after his canopy failed to open during a charity
parachute jump.
Stephen Priestley died in a 500-foot plunge at Hibaldstow Airfield,
Lincolnshire.
The 36-year-old, of Greenwood Avenue, Hull, was married with three
young children.
It is understood he was doing his second jump for charity when the
accident happened.
"The man had been undertaking a parachute jump when there appears to
have been a problem with his main parachute," she said.
"It would appear the emergency chute then failed to inflate in time
and the parachutist fell some 500 feet. Tragically the man was
pronounced dead at the scene."
Humberside Police are investigating."

That article doesn't even give a date. When did this happen? What happened? Bad exit? Entangled in lines? Pants article. Just this past weekend some of the instructors were saying that they need to review the exits etc. for people doing charity jumps (ie one offs).
Sorry about the guy who went in but maybe they should put SL first jumpers on rounds and make the exit a bit more like the army's. When's the last time you can remember reading about a paratrooper going in on his first jump?

where does it say this was his first jump?? sounds like he was doing a jump for charity (demo?) and it was the 2nd for that. am i missing something here??

It says its a second jump.
In the UK, lots (most?) of 1st jumps are for charity (you get a form and collect say 250£ (dont quote me) and you get a SL or Tandem for free (the DZ gets money, so does the charity)

oh ok......i guess charity means something different as far as context. to me, charity means that someone jumped to raise money for a cause. and usually, that is done by experienced jumpers. thanks for clearing it up. --------------

Condolences to everyone effected, shit this is the second in the uk that i know of this year. The other was a student at topcliffe (merlin) or was it peterleigh, anyway first or second jump went in. But thats the last i heard.... again my condolences.

Yeah ya right, usually firsttime or one off jumpers tend to get sponsored by friends, family etc then as long as its over a certain amount they get a tandem or SL jump for free. Its usually a win win situation :(
