Viking 0 #1 November 19, 2001 Hey you guys long time since i posted last, you guys that know me know why i havn't been around.Anyway back to my first jump after a month of ground pounding. I spent the night before out in the desert watching the light show (which kicked ass by the way) I get back home, take a quick shower and head for the dropzone. I get there and manifest, i go find my trusty pd260 (the only chute on the dz that hasn't given me a funny walk for a week!) I find all my other gear and set it aside next to my bag. Then Adam the second in command comes up and asked me when my last jump was. This reminded me of the staying current thing i knew exactly where he was going and told him that i was past my 30 days and he said to go to manifest and ask for a recurency dive. I had already payed for a solo jump and gear rental so i just payed the extra $25 and went back and hung around waiting for my load to come up. Well on the ten minute call i was gettting geared up and the manifest guy comes and tells me he had to bump me from the load b/c he forgot to add my instructor damnit and then he tells me that this might be the last load!!!! what its only 3:30!! damn damn . He noticed how pissed i was and says that he might be able to get enough fun jumpers to fill out the load. I smile and say that would be cool ) Then it gets pretty craping right off exit i am rocking all over the place trying to keep steve infront of me. In the video you can see how tense i am. But i get stable and find steve and do a 360 and when i get back on heading he is below me!! what the hell i am floating on him!!! how did this happen?? so i tuck it in and sink down to him and then back to my normal position once again i start floating on him!! damnit what the hell. So i just keep my heading on him as he orbits me and then at about 5k he stops orbiting and i get to aggresive and go from my arch to a track, i instantly start rocking but still get a little forward movement how straight it was i would rather not say so i stop the track and check alti and holyshit its 4k (supposed to pull at 4.5k ). I wave off really fast and dump i see steve do the same a split second before and we sorta pace each other as we open!! kind weird seeing somthing slowing down with you, but i end up below him and we are WAYYY out so i unstow the brakes and watch steve just take off (he flys a Spinletto 120). Anyway i realize that i might not make it back and start looking for a flat chunk of ground to head for (thank god i read SKymedics post!!!). Now mind you i am over Otay lake without a water pack on (SMACK) and a shitty spot. Thank god i had a tail wind b/c when i got to the end of the runway I was at 500-700 (supposed to be at 1k) Ok so i made it back but i have to figure out where to start my cross wind. Weeeeeeeeeeell i judged wrong and turned into the ground and broke my leg!!! (did you see that one coming?? i hope not b/c it just a joke )I know i shouldn't joke about shit like that but thats how i deal with my mistakes. In all seriousness though i ended up turning lower than someone like me should have and got a good talking to for it. Damn i need to jump for often. anyway thats how my recurency jump went. RemiAndKaren 0 #2 November 19, 2001 Sounded fun!QuoteIn all seriousness though i ended up turning lower than someone like me should have and got a good talking to for it. Its never too early to hook it!!! Seriously, its never too early to learn how to flat turn. Its what will make the difference between a really bad mistake and a really well executed good last second decision. Dont plan to do a low turn (whatever low is in your book) but always have the flat turn as one of your outs.RemiMuff
mountainman 0 #3 November 19, 2001 Hey Viking....glad to hear that you at least got to get back up in the air. Laura and I have not been jumping much lately due to a lack of rental stuff at the DZ and a lack of time. I really want to get jumping again soon! Since we got our rigs now, I'm sure that will turn around. Too bad it is mid-November and not mid-March. hehehe.....oh well. Time to make-due. Sure glad you are ok and you at least got to get up there!! Congrats!!!--------------JumpinDuo.com is here!!!
Whiskeychick 0 #4 November 19, 2001 Glad you didn't get hurt. Otay's not the friendliest of places for off landings. But hey, only 7 more jumps and we can go play!
Viking 0 #5 November 19, 2001 Hey trina you bet girl but i don't know if i will be able to keep up with you for the hybrid dive Maybe it was just my being so nervous but steves protrack said i wasn't going faster than 120!! and the really bad part is that everybody was all "Hey steve you better take a bar of lead with you!!" he did take 8lbs with him thats why he could get back up to me. oh after watching the video of my landing my crosswind-final turn was at like 100feet or less!!I swear you must have footprints on the back of your helmet - chicagoskydiver
Katzeye 0 #6 November 20, 2001 Viking, Viking, Viking.... tsk, tsk, tsk. I'm assuming you turned low because you were aiming for the middle of the field? Remember, you can always land over by the old paintball court, there's no shame in WALKING away from a safe landing, even if you don't get to land in front. 7 more jumps and you get to go out into the REAL world and play! I bet we could even scrounge a nice rig for you up North if you want to finish your A license at a friendlier place...Blue skies!Katzeye
Viking 0 #7 November 20, 2001 Quote7 more jumps and you get to go out into the REAL world and play!does this mean you can come outside and play too?? and i know i did wrong i make no excuses other than people make mistakes. Now what do you mean by a friendlier place?? I asume you mean Elsinore. Whats not friendly about Otay? besides i like the relativly steady wind from one direction! although the rig finding offer got my attention nice to hear from ya again hows your knee and back??
