Mental Training

Recommended Posts

I've just finish John DeRosalia's Book " Mental Training in Skydiving and Life". Anyone Read it? Does anyone use mental training to help performance? I usually repeat 3 chosen words over and over again, i find it helps me to concetrate on key elements.Anyway just curious.

Yes I've read the book too. Very well written with a lot of good tips. Especially if you haven't done any sort of mental training before.
I've done a lot of zazen meditation, so on the ride up I'll usually just calm my mind and use mental imagery to map out the dive.
Zen & skydiving seem to go together well. Once out of the plane I try to "just do it". ;)

I hear ya dude. I really liked the part where he talks about the games, he uses mantal imagery alot. I study Aikido and imagery is somthing we don't use alot, we focus more on breathing techniques. Do you know anyother good book?

Read it. I like the tools to help you focus on "your most important goals" and I use the Imaging alot. Even the chapters on team training did a lot for me during dirt dives and debriefs.
Lots of psycho-babble in there, just skip over those parts. If you haven't read " The Art of Freefall Relative Work" by Pat Works, it's and oldie but a goodie.

Yes, provided that everyone else on your team does the same!
The problem is that getting 5 people all in the same state of mind, rhythm and flow isn't quite as easy as it sounds.
It takes a LOT of time, money and hard work to just be decent at this sport -- let alone "perfect".

If you can rehearse the perfect skydive in your mind while the plane is climbing to altitude, then you can step out and do the perfect skydive.

I did the opposite, picked up aikido about 4 years before the first jump - used to be the joke at the dojo about the requirement to become shihan was being able to jump out of a plane, breakfall and still be able to kick the collective butts of an American football defensive line.
Aikido - the art of being beaten up by people half your size and twice your age - all in the pursuit of transforming from the ever airborne uke to the energizier nage. :)

I just ordered that book and I hope to use it for myself and use parts of it to help some of the students I train.
As for imagery, I am a big believer it it and it has helped me immensly. Right now, I try to tell my students not to just go over the dive-flow in their heads but to see themselves doing it perfectly every time. If they can imagine themselves being able to give a perfect performace then they are much more likely to perform better when they actually get out of the airplane.
I am also a big believer in good breathing and smiling as well. With my 45-second delay students I use an exit count of "Ready, Set, Breathe!" and when we leave the step I want to see them doing it and smiling as much as I am.
