jfields 0 #1 December 5, 2001 I don't remember seeing anything in the SIM about requirements for cold weather jumping. One day at the DZ, they said we couldn't jump until it got warmer, and it made me wonder about what the official deal is.Assuming that enough people are willing to jump to fly the plane, is there a reason why the temperature is a problem? I know you have to wear the appropriate clothing and such, but that is possible.I'm talking about say... -10F to about 40F, not Siberia.JustinMy Homepage
mountainman 0 #2 December 5, 2001 I've never seen anything in the SIMs about it (and I've read them 3 times). I think it is probably just the DZ decision not to jump/fly when it's cold.Maybe if you do a search in the safety/training forum, you'll find something out.-------------http://www.JumpinDuo.com"oh no. freeflir29 0 #3 December 5, 2001 Ummm...considering winter is when the military does most of it's jumping in Alaska I can't conceive why there would be any limits on sport jumping??????"and I'm not easily impressed...Ooohh look...a blue car!" -Homer Simpson
jfields 0 #4 December 5, 2001 I know that it is possible, but didn't know about regs or guidelines from USPA or some such. Is it just at the DZO's discretion or something?JustinMy Homepage
3fLiEr 0 #5 December 5, 2001 The UK have no problems with the cold - last year the lowest I jumped at altitude was minus30C - does nothing for your lips and face over the winter months................ but what wonderful crisp clear days you have !!!!bsbd"In a world where we are slaves to gravity I am pleased to be a freedom fighter"
airann 1 #6 December 5, 2001 I tell you what my friend, and I swear by this...Silk long underwear. They are ultra thin BUT they work just right. You can get them at the nicer ski outfitter stores. I have even used the hand warmer packets and feet warmer packets and those are good as well. The thing about silk underwear is that they breathe and they go under you clothes like a dream. I wear them under my stuff and you dont have to have tons of layers and your jumpsuit still fits. Now for the nose, havent come up with anything for that yet, this side of a full face. I sold my custom Oxygen. It just wasnt right for me, never wore it once.Maybe this year I will do a Muff Brother dive.AirAnn of http://www.AirAnn.comMultimedia Page: secret link- upper left hand corner
jfields 0 #7 December 5, 2001 Ann,I'm good on the clothing. It was the regulations part I had questions about. As to what I wear, so far I haven't jumped in weather below freezing on the ground, so I've been okay with moderate stuff. I have 3mm neoprene gloves, which work great. My body and feet are always okay inside my jumpsuit, wearing sweats or something. I jump an open-face helmet, but I have a polypro ski-mask sort of thing. It doesn't completely block wind, but it helps. The gloves were the biggest issue, because hands can get cold really fast.JustinMy Homepage
airann 1 #8 December 5, 2001 oopsie, my bad...I never thought about regs... interesting topic, however.I figure we are ok if the wings dont ice and we dont come down as ice cubes. If the plane goes up... I am going too.AirAnn of http://www.AirAnn.comMultimedia Page: secret link- upper left hand corner
huffermoose 0 #9 December 5, 2001 I usually jump with sandles on and i really don't feel the cold that much. However i was in empuriabrava in spain 3 weeks ago and it was early and a bit nippy and 3 guys were there about to do a 3 way. so i asked if i could jump with them and i'll film them so up we go. I turn around to them and tell them to take there time in the door as there is no rush as we are in the porter so out goes the 1st group and we wair 6/7 seconds or so and then i step out my god i thought i ws going to freeze, and you can guess the guys were taking my advice and taking there time. So i'm standing on the camera step thinking "hurry up hurry up" as my face is getting sand blasted. they jump out and the r.w exit turned into a head down i'm talking a perfect flower which they hold for about 10 seconds which gives me a bit of time to do some head up freeflying and then onto my belly again. well as soon as they broke up they somehow managed to find their box position anyhow i'm waffling. the moral of the story is i wasn't wearing gloves whilst jumping, while it was -30'C outside, all i can say it was somewhat diffiicult to curl my fingers around my Hacky whhich took me 2 attempts.got on the ground straight to the DZ shop , gloves tube scarf and some lipsil please!!!!!
