Flying on your back in a birdman suit is not a big deal at all. The reason someone would go straight head-down in one is so that they will have more power for when they go for that "minimum rate of descent". The goal there is to totally cancel vertical movement, like turf surfing your canopy.

"The goal there is to totally cancel vertical movement"
From what I have seen and heard I think it would be totally possible to gain altitude in a flare if you got head down for 10 sec or so. That would be pretty cool I guess! Actually stop your descent........:P

"what i meant was if you go headdown and then purpusly transition would it be the only way to gain altitude?"
Well...in normal (belly to earth attitude) I have heard of speeds as slow as 30 some mph (descent rate) It may be possible to just pull the wings in to gain speed but I'm no Birdman pilot so I'll leave that to the experts!

"Does anyone know?"
its easy... when you are rolling down a hill in your car (without power) and you come immediately to the next hill, the car continues to roll up the hill until it loses momentum. Granted it wont go back up as high as it started, but it aslso doesnt just stop at the bottom.
Thats a basic way of how to think of it. The comment about "gaining altitude" does seem to imply that they got out at 15, went vertical, then were able to fly back up above 15k (if you arent paying complete attention)
