FAA Letters on Skydiving Operations

Two letters concerning skydiving operations have been added to DiverDriver.com. One talks about flying aircraft in formation with skydivers. The second letter discusses how skydivers are allowed to sit on the floor of the aircraft and do not have to have a crashworthy seat while engaged in the activity of skydiving within 25 nautical miles of the departure airport.
Please join the DiverDriver.com forum and voice your opinion or ask questions about jump aircraft. The site is growing and more people are starting to view it. If you're a skydiver, pass on this site info to your jump pilot. The more people we get involved in discussing aircraft operations with skydivers the better. Check out the Accidents section for this year's accident reports from the NTSB. This site is not just for pilots.

One thing that probably should be pointed out to the skydivers reading these documents is that the FARs and Interps are very specific in their use of terms such as "passenger" and "occupant" and that the definition of a passenger in one FAR or Interp is sometimes slightly different or might be applied differently than in another.
As I'm sure you're aware, this causes a lot of confusion among, not just skydivers, but pilots and FAA inspectors as well.
I personally love the Interps. When I used to flight instruct, I kept a collection of them to settle little "discussions". It's a shame that there isn't a searchable on-line publication of the Interps at the FAA library. It'd be way useful.

You're right about the confusion. Which is why I put up those letters. Did I confuse the issue more? That was certainly not my intent. Email me with how you think it should be modified. It would be a nice help. This site is going to be built from a lot of people's experience and expertise.

great site man. Reading through the accident reports is useful to me even as a non-pilot; I'm starting to think of what I would do in certain situations and I know more things to be wary of when I'm in the plane.
I also got a few chuckles from the reports, like this one about a fuel-low situation occuring at the beginning of jump run: "A skydiver who was aboard the airplane ... looked forward at the airplane's cockpit, and saw the airplane's instrument panel lights lit, and ... upon seeing the lights, and receiving the pilots command to leave, he hastily departed the airplane. "
I think "hastily departed" is NTSB-speak for "got the hell out of". :D
I wanted to put some really inspiring lyrics here but none of them fit.

No, I don't think you've confused the issue at all, it's just that the issue is confusing by itself and generally I find that skydivers aren't used to dealing in FAA terms.
So, for YOUR web site, the issue is crystal clear. I assume that any jump pilot will probably understand the nuances involved, but here skydivers may need additional explaination.

The plane is not quite flying yet. I was hoping to have it in the air this year, but have had a few setbacks. Not having a job has made finishing it difficult. We've nearly finished the fiberglass work for the cowl and will fit the wings this weekend. After that it is tweaking, inspecting & paint.
Yep, I started skydiving at SDA, lately I've been hanging out at Atlanta Air Sportz which is half the distance from my house. I was at SDC this summer for Summerfest. I flew in a crappy rented 172 with two friends. We stayed with Tall Guy from the rigging loft.

Gotcha now. Well, I appreciate the points. Keeps my thread alive and people viewing it.
You're right, the site is geared towards pilots. But, as jumpers get into this more they tend to thirst for knowledge. If they don't get something they can always post on the forum that is on my site. That's what it's there for. It's all about education. I'll try to do better when I announce the updates here to include more explanation for non-pilots.

No shit. I flew the first weekend of Summerfest and then jumped the rest of the time on the bigways mostly the second weekend. Well, until I hopped in to fly the trail plane on the last load.

What do you guys think about this plane? I'm looking for a Mooney with manual flaps and gear. I think that will be the cheapest decent cross country plane to get. And this one seems to be cheap!

Don't confuse cheap to purchase with cheap to own. $30k for a 2-seater isn't cheap. My understanding is that parts are generally cheaper on the Cessnas than on Mooney and Piper.

Yeah.....but an M-20 will lift about as much as a C-172 and go 20-30 knots faster at cruise. The maintenance and reliability aspects aren't bad because the retrac gear and manual flaps are simple......cost of parts....I have no idea
