TheMarshMan1 0 #1 December 10, 2001 Hey all, I'm not sure how to describe this...but how is the "powder" effect created when a main opens up? It looks like someone just sprinkled some kind of powder in the main while packing it, so when it opens it goes everywhere. Looks pretty cool. If I remember right someone (not sure who) does it in Crosswind. Looks like maybe Talcum powder or something? Not really planning on doing it, just wondering what they use. Also, does it have any adverse effect on the canopy? Its the first time I'd ever seen it, so I was just curious....Blue skies,Marshall
Slowfaller 0 #2 December 10, 2001 In " Crosswind " I thought it was sand from landing in the desert. I could very well be wrong though" Quit your job and light a fart, eat your favorite private part " - The Man Show Song
TheMarshMan1 0 #3 December 10, 2001 Yikes, if thats sand that'd be a little scary. Sand has a nice way of destroying things. Anyways...it looks a little more "powdery" than sand. But, I also could also be wrong....
PhreeZone 20 #4 December 11, 2001 Thats sand alright....Probally a little dust thrown in too. One of the jumpers I jump with was at nationals and jumped a couple of times. She was still getting sand out of the canopy 3 weeks and 15 jumps after leaving Eloy. Most desert jumped canopys lines are brown in half the tme it takes any other line to get brown.I want to touch the sky, I want to fly so high ~ Sonique
TheMarshMan1 0 #5 December 11, 2001 Gee, don't I feel RETARDED. lol, I thought it was something they put in there for effect. Oh well.
quade 4 #6 December 11, 2001 There's no law that says you have to land out . . .Eloy has two perfectly usable and fairly large grass landing areas.Paulhttp://futurecam.com/skydive.html
weid14 0 #7 December 11, 2001 actaully the prank has been played using flour. while packing insert flour, -- on opening it does create a dramatic effect (dont' get it wet though). the desert sand does create the same effect, and that stuff stays in your gear -- white to brown, black turns brown, gray turns brown..... weid14 0 #8 December 11, 2001 nope, but there's no law that says the pilot is going to give you a spot that will let you land ON! (I know, I know, use your eyes, but since I'm inside the plane, I can't look and we were told to go on green and they will pick us up if needed.) AggieDave 6 #9 December 11, 2001 Remember something, putting stuff in your canopy *could* hurt the canopy. Sand isn't soft, it's very sharp little grains that could put tiny cuts in the fabric. Same with anything else.AggieDave '02-------------Blue Skies and Gig'em Ags!BTHO t.u.

weber 0 #11 December 11, 2001 I heard that you should use baby powder. Baking Soda is bad because it is a base and your canopy is an acidy material...or maybe its the other way around...
AggieDave 6 #12 December 11, 2001 Remember to wash your canopy after doing anything like that, the easiest way is to disconnect the risers and through it in the washing machine on the gentle cycle...(DISCLAIMER: DON'T DO THAT! that was a joke, I don't want to get an e-mail from someone who was stupid enough to do that!)AggieDave '02-------------Blue Skies and Gig'em Ags!BTHO t.u. Merrick 0 #13 December 11, 2001 Yeah, sand is abslute hell on canopies from what I've seen. Last summer three jumpers moved to OK from AZ & jumped at our DZ for a while. I was amazed when Packing next to one of them after doing a 4 way with them and he started ragging me about having 50 some odd jumps at the time & a "brand spankin new" canopy... I just laughed, I jump a 96' Sabre that had just over 600 jumps at the time, he couldn't believe, I think he said his had about half that at the time (it was also a Sabre) and it looked absolutely horrible (faded, dingy, & gritty feeling), while mine, aparently, still looks pretty new.
