Pyke....watch out!! OUCH

Recommended Posts

Hey guys ...
A friend of mine jumped with Pyke this weekend and relayed this to me tonight. Seems Tom (my friend) and Blaine were doing a 3 way on a very bad spot. Blaine pulled rather low for the spot and attempted to make it back with no success. Tom said he watched him turn toward a small field for landing when he realized he wouldn't make it back. I'm not sure exactly what happened but when he passed over some trees he either hit one or something happened to his canopy but anyway he wound up under a deflated main and hit pretty hard. Tom thinks he broke his femur and another bone but doesn't know which one. They did surgery Sunday evening is the last report I've heard.
Blaine...you are in my thoughts and prayers. Keep your chin up and a smile on your face.

Ouch. That sucks.
I landed in a tree once - scared the hell out of me. I was _lucky_ to escape with nothing more than a sprained ankle and a canopy full of leaves, and bruised pride.
Since that experience I've become a bit more cautious about making it back from long spots. These days if it looks questionable I look for an out immediatly, then, to remove all doubt about where I'm going to land I spiral down, set up for landing and walk away every time.
Let's hope that Pyke makes a speedy and complete recovery.

Send pyke my best wishes for a speedy & complete recovery.
But for God's sake don't give him a laptop for his hospital bed or he'll give Clay a run for his money as top post whore! :o

Mouth, do you know where Blaine is? Cyber and he are close friends, as you know. Sad to find out this way. But send us some information if you can. He will likely call Bill or Monica in the morning.
Do you know if it was in Monroe or Thomaston? Cyber told him to avoid the trees, that is how he broke his ankle. Hitting a tree, trying to make it back from a long spot, didnt work out and well, etc.
We are/were expected to be in GA staying with Pyke on the 15th for the Skydive Monroe X-Mas Party at the Hilton.
Yikes, this cant be good.

Cyber talked to CokeMan today and it sounds like he is at home now. Yep, he broke his leg alright.
Both of Cybers friends are home now from the hospital. The other friend went in under a spinning reserve. Was basically left there for dead by the person at the house where he landed and the medics came and he wound up in the end with bleeding spleen, busted vertebra, 52 broken bones including pelvis, and he is going to be alright. He might limp some. Which is damn fine considering the situation.
Earlier this year, Cybers friend and close DZ person swooped in hit a parked plane and that was it. His son was at the DZ packin and didnt go on that load. They say with or without a helmet with that kind of impact on a swoop you cant tell whether the helmet would have been a saver or not.
Well, everyone be SAFE out there.

First of all, thanks to all who have posted their concern and thoughts - very much appreciated!! In fact, it is amazing to find out just how "close" the skydiving community is when something like this happens.
Status report: Broken R femur, no other breaks, however I require a second surgery to fix a 1cm discrepency between my legs - seems like young doctors AREN'T the way to go for something this serious - although, I am grateful for what he has done - just a damn big inconvenience!!! Landed in a recently mowed briar patch, so the break isn't nearly as bad as the scratched to shit leg that it is in! Recovery is expected in 6-8 and they presume I will be in the air in 3-4 months.
Incident Report: After my first successful FF and actually accomplishing a sit, I pulled low for where I was, but not low by any stretch. Blame a bad spot (although, no blame is on the "spotter") and a low opening for the lead up to a rather painful experience. My head was on a swivel trying to sort out the best possible landing areas, and while the one I chose was not "bad", my approach was perhaps (obviously!) wrong. I executed a 90 degree turn on my final to line up for the most amount of landing room, and it wasn't until I actually hit that I realised I wasn't in control. I had been getting used to the Heatwave response, and thought I was in for an ugly, but ok landing. Once impact occured, I heard it (I had always wondered when people said you could "hear" it, man, if you have been there, you KNOW) break. It wasn't until I stopped that I realised how much pain there was! An eyewitness raking his leaves said I hit a tree, but I am not sure how accurate that is - however, I was not looking up at the time. I flared late, and well, you can guess the rest!
As for some of the comments: Sure, why not use this as an excuse for some extra BJs from the missus! Isn't that what injuries are for?? I load my Heatwave at (what I think is an unimpressive) 1.26:1 and have managed several brillant landings on it back to back to back....etc.
They always say, it is never ONE big thing that leads to accidents, it is an accural of lots of little things - well, this is a textbook example of some little things turning into big things. However, (as someone pointed out to a family member upon hearing the news) at least I had enough experience to "just break a leg". And with that, the recovery begins!!!!
Oh, and to not lose sight of the reality of it all......
First successful FF = BEER
First skydiving injury = BEER:D:)Be safe, have fun, and soft, cushy landings!!!!!!

Good to hear you are going to be okay Blaine. I'm sure it's actually going to be a blessing to have some assistance around while you are healing...in all manners :)
You'll be ready to go again by the time it starts warming up a bit. Just try not to think about it too much. I hear that tends to happen with a lot of people who are out for a while because of injury...they think about it over and over in that down time, wigging them out worse the more they do because it always gets worse in their heads each time. I did a bit of that after my really low pull and getting tangled in the bridle as a student.
Take care!
