riggerrob 643 #1 December 15, 2001 Refreshing my earlier question on another thread. Will someone please explain to me how Osama bin Laden can claim that God will be pleased with Osama's evil deeds, when he is referring to the same God who told Moses "thou shalt not kill?" SpeedRacer 1 #3 December 15, 2001 Well, any religion or ethnic identity can be abused in this way. Look at the "Christian" conquistadors, Inquisition, etc. (And I'd like to point out here that I am a Christian myself)Basically, its gangster mentality. I belong to gang XYZ, therefore, it is my duty to beat the shit out of anyone from a different "gang". These assholes who called themselves Christians and enslaved, slaughtered & stole from the Indians, or who tortured non-Christians in Europe, were in total violation of everything Christ said, but their thought process was "We're Christians, they're not, therefore, we get to ...oops, I mean we HAVE to....kill, rape, pillage, torture the Indians/ nonChristians & take their land & gold The fact that the main Christian doctrine is supposed to be about love was sort of sidelined. In fact they'd probably call you a wimp (or not a TRUE Christian) for even bringing it up.It's the same deal with people like Osama. He's really religious. Some guy who knew him in Somalia says that whenever they were together in a stadium for a sport event or something, and music would start playing, Osama would block his ears b/c he thinks music is evil. He averts his eyes if he sees a woman who isn't wearing a veil. So he follows all the little rules, but he's still evil. In the early years of Christ's ministry, Jesus's main complaint was with the religious leaders at the time, who he complained, were following the letter of the law, but not its spirit. So that's part of the reason Jesus would occasionally deliberately break a rule or two, i.e., eating when the rules say he should be fasting, having his followers glean grain on the Sabbath, etc. His point was that just following all the little rules isn't the important thing.Speed RacerWhat contemptible scoundrel has stolen the cork from my lunch?!-WC Fields
SkyDekker 1,465 #4 December 17, 2001 Arghh, don't even get me started on religion. I don't agree with Marx on most things he wrote, but religion truly is the opium of the people. These problems of wanting to convert the entire world to ones own religion are not Islam's. Just look at how most Christian churches go about their business. Just see how the Vatican treated the jews during WWII. Just read Falwell's response to the Sept. 11 attacks, etc etc.Whenever groups start setting rules and regs, their will be people, fundamentalists, within those groups who will take it to the extreme. It happens in every group......Now, someone please blow Osama's head off his shoulders!!!Just my 0.02cSkyDekker"We cannot do great things, only small things with great love" Mother Theresa
SpeedRacer 1 #5 December 17, 2001 Well, I'm just saying don't over-generalize about religion, b/c on the other hand, religion can motivate people to do great things. I noticed your quote from Mother Theresa, there's a perfect example.Speed RacerWhat contemptible scoundrel has stolen the cork from my lunch?!-WC Fields
