Question about spreading ashs on a jump.

Recommended Posts

My grandfather requested that when he went he wanted to be cremated. Now we plan to spread his ashs at sea, as he loved deep sea fishing. I was thinking about getting a small amount of ash to dispense on a jump as my own peronel way of both saying goodbye and having him watching over as i am doing for him.
Now my question is this legal to just do? I would tell the DZO and anyone that was on the load what was going on. But i just need to know if i would be breaking any laws. Thanx

In the begining of I think Good Stuff.... Olav spreads some with a few people and you can watch it. If you dont have it I may be able to catch it for you and email that part.
Its pretty simple, however. Possible they mixed a few other things in to make it visible. But I am just guessing. I believe that I would want to be able to see my dust as it flew if I had a choice.

No need... ashes alone are very visible in freefall and on video.

how did he spread the ash? what did he use?

I'm sure there are a number of different ways to do it, but the best one I've seen is a cordura bag with a velcro sealed easy to open closure on the top. The bag is strapped to the forearm. When it's time to let them go, you simply pull the top open with your other hand.

It looks like Olav just broke / twisted a Zip-Loc bag in half during the jump leaving the ashes pouring from each hand (Beautiful shot, by the way). At the end of the dive when all the ashes are gone it looks like half a plastic bag is left flapping in the wind in one of his hands.
Anyone care to verify this?

Viking, I hate to throw a blanket on this, but you might want to wait till you get a little more experience and at least enough jumps to get your licence. Flying with a Camera person is easy enough to do, but if you want to make a really high quality video to show your family, you need to be falling straight down, and when you move to release the ashes, you should'nt turn or move at all. The more effort the camera person has to put into chasing you, the worse the video will look.
Wait till spring when the ground is alive and colorful, you've got another couple of jumps and can talk a few camera people into doing it for free then do a few practice with out the ashes to make sure you ar'nt going to flip when you try and open a bag in freefall. Once you practice, pick a day thats special for your Grandfather (his birthday, wedding aniversry, etc) then jump the ashes on that day. It will mean more to you 20 years down the road to have a video of you that loks good but took time, then a cheap looking video that was tossed together over 1 day.
Just IMHO......
As for the bag on the fore arm, any rigger could whip that up in a few hours for you.

Phree the video was an after thought brought up by this forum. I won't have any trouble getting a video guy if i dicide to have one. when it happens it will happen as a way for me to personlly deal with the loss. My family and i will spread his ash' at sea. But i want to do somthing for myself.

Phree has a point that is pretty cool. Spring is a neat time. And the idea of a special day is a good. In the end, however its up to you how to deal with your loss.
Nevermind the cameras, getting camera people should be zero problem, they will want to go at no cost whatsoever. Skydivers are good people. And dont even think about them when you do the jump just go and do it. When you are ready.
