PalmettoTiger 1 #26 January 4, 2002 isn't there some story about the crash from the opening sequence of The Six Million Dollar Man being from a real NASA or USAF testing program? I have this bit of trivia in my head about the design team needing to add weight to the front of an experimental aircraft, and reinforcing the cockpit to withstand dozens or maybe even hundreds of G's rather than just bolting in blocks of metal. Then the damn thing actually crashes, but the pilot survives thanks to the extra reinforcement. Of course, I could be totally wrong.
Nick 0 #27 January 4, 2002 Yes you are correct, the crash in the opening of the $6,000,000 man is from when NASA were experimenting with lifting body designs. Interestingly they are using this design for an escape craft from the International Space Station.Nick
weid14 0 #28 January 4, 2002 Paul Fayard is the owner, it was in Cross Keys the majority of the last two years. But they bought their own otter now (which was also built by the same folks who did the Franken) - to go along with the skyvan, caravan, biplane, 182, occasional hot air balloon and helicopter rides. Anyway, the plane travels around to whomever will lease it now.
wildblue 7 #29 January 4, 2002 QuoteCare to enlighten me? I got called back to Ottawa early from California with the other otter. Was none to happy to get back to see 30EA sitting with a tarp over it.And it didn't just "catch fire". It was set on fire. You think you know something then I suggest you let the FBI know your feelings since it is still an open CRIMINAL investigation. It was those pissed off union workers.... everybody knows that..... I ain't happy, I'm feeling gladI got sunshine, in a bag
NtheSeaOrSky 0 #30 January 4, 2002 My first jump at a new DZ, my instructor was giving me a run down of stuff. He said we will be jumping the frankenotter, non chalantly and just went on and on about landing area. All I "heard" was otter...thinking OK Ive jumped those before no biggie. We go out to the landing area and up drives the frankenotter, he points, "that will be our ride" Thats when I realize what he said. "Oh, I get it franken-otter LOL" He told me its story, and I was like its got mega personality! Nice quick ride to alti and a lot more interior room than I was accustomed to! Cool window stickers too!
