Pammi 0 #1 January 4, 2002 Okay, a few drinks later this is my thoughts:We are all children. We beg to get away from our parents (JM's) only to then be lost saying "what do we do now" and "will you play with me"What other such thoughts have you had?Oh btw, off the subject but to not start another thread..what about things you remember hearing and believing as a whuffo or new jumper? I remember when I first inquired about jumping before I met Merrick, I asked "Can you jump in winter?" The answer? "Oh yes! That's when we all prefer to jump. It's so cool, crisp and beautiful then!" ROFLMAO! Okay, whatever!Closing pin jewelry
scottbre 0 #2 January 4, 2002 Hey, I was just private messaging someone about this. Waddya know. This isn't really ironic per se, but before I started jumping I thought that you deployed your chute by reaching across your body and pulling the ripcord. Doesn't make any sense to me now, but I am inside the fold now."Can't keep my mind from the circling sky. Tongue-tied & twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I." Pammi 0 #3 January 4, 2002 Oh yes...I've had a couple of really 'icky' incidents I have a scar from pulling the pilot chute in front of me on my first pull on my own after practice pulls in IAD. Our very own HH, along with many other old timers on this forum, helped me stick to it after scaring myself to death. A few jumps later...pulled at around 1300 or so. Actually last looked at alti at 1500'. Oh my gawd. Enuf said. Closing pin jewelry
scottbre 0 #4 January 4, 2002 The worst I managed to do as far as dumb mistakes was I deployed on my back the first time I jumped my new rig. It was the first time I had used a BOC and I was nervous. Needless to say it was a hard opening. I scared my DZO to death, but I was to ignorant of what exactly I had done to be scared while it was happening. It retrospect, let's just say it was a good learning experience, after I was told what could have happened. "Can't keep my mind from the circling sky. Pammi 0 #5 January 4, 2002 Exactly. Good to know, better to have learned and the best to move forward with the knowledge :)Closing pin jewelry
PalmettoTiger 1 #6 January 4, 2002 My biggest mistake so far, other than jumping an undersized reserve 10 times, came when I packed my pilot chute and wound up with a little extra bridle. Rather than redoing the S-folds, I just stuffed the bridle as far down the BOC pouch as it would go. Result: a really hard pull, so hard that I was going to hit silver if I hadn't made it on the last try. Luckily I didn't have to find out the hard way how bad a choice the reserve really was.I look back and I'm in awe of how fucking careless I was in a sport this dangerous. I wonder what else I may be neglecting.
Pammi 0 #7 January 4, 2002 Exactly PT. But the way I see it is at least we CARE to consider that and try our damndest. It's those who don't think about it and stop respecting it that I am scared of getting bitch slapped in a major way.Closing pin jewelry
Kris 0 #8 January 4, 2002 Okay, here's irony at its finest:About three weeks ago I'm teaching an IAD student the mechanics for his first clear & pull. I threw him on the creepers and wrapped the PC around his arms & legs, taught the two-try rule, covered horse-shoe malfunctions & other scenarios, and how vitally important it is to give a good, strong throw of the PC to get it clear of your burble while maintaining stability.Sure enough, I go up to JM a couple of students, follow the last one out, smoke it down to 2400 & throw out. Waiting....Waiting....Waiting (gulp)...Before I even think about it, both hands are on my handles as I take a look over my shoulder to see what is going on. That was all it took. The PC took off from my burble around 1900 and my Stiletto was open at 1400.I guess I had better work on that whole "Do as I say, not as I act" thing when it comes to throwing the PC...Kris

Ducky 0 #10 January 4, 2002 Hehee,The day I took my FJC was also my first trip to a DZ. The clss started at like 7am so no one was jumping. We were in a room with no windows... So we get out for break and I walk to the car for a smoke. I hear some flapping/popping noise and I look up. Just above me and to my right Is some guy face to earth with chute open, what appears to be 50ft from the treetops beside the landing area. I scream "oh F&%K he's gonna die!!!!!". The other students turn in time to see the guy nearly take the paint off the roof of a neighboring car with his toes.. they give a complimentary "oh Sh#@t!!!!!!!!!!!!". The guys swoops what seems like a mile and touches down what seems like the most graceful landing I have ever seen. The next 11 guys all land nice n smooth. We were all like..."did he mean to do that or was it a nice recovery?" Ironically, the same guy ends up being my AFF instructor a few hours later. So I ask him about it. He says "oh yeah man it was an amazing thing that i recovered, i though i was a goner". I bit of course and am thinking ok wait this guy is gonna jump with me and get me back safely???? Luckily when we were back outside someone explained it to me.kwak

ADRNALN 0 #14 January 4, 2002 Here a bit of newbie irony. On the ride to alt on my second tandem, my JM starts talking to this young guy next to us. This young guy tells him he's taking this student up for an AFP jump. I remember thinking "Gosh, I hope I don't get that kid as an instructor. He does not look like he is old enough to that many jumps." Well, I go back to the DZ a week or two later to do my first AFP jump and who is my instructor, you guess it the same young kid. Turned out to the best thing that could have happen to me. He was an awesome instructor, he made me feel super comfortable with the jump and I felt very prepared. So I get home after jumping and decide to do a little research because I was so wrong about jumping with this "kid" (ya right, I think I was the kid up there). The Irony now, the instructor was none other than Rook Nelson. I felt like such a moron.Lessons learned: 1. Don't judge a book by its cover. (Something I have always said and tried to live by, oops)2. Experience counts more than age.
mikefarmer 0 #15 January 4, 2002 Did you use the jumper cables or the bounce sheets? We always liked the "Bounce" sheets, well, because they said bounce. We did this to a guy from public TV making a first jump for his show. Hook, line, and static discharge sinker!!! Rolled on the floor. Anybody remember when that "Ushuia", or whatever, show on Discovery Channel put the line about breathing by osmosis on the screen? That one damn near killed me!!!Mike Sky World

Sebazz1 2 #20 January 4, 2002 One thing I was told long ago and I still don't know if it's true, but here we go........DZO told me that yuo don't need to breath in freefall cause your going so fast that the oxygen penetrates your skin alowing you to breath through your skin....Is the day over yet? I need some air and some brew pronto.......
