AggieDave 6 #26 January 3, 2002 Yup, good'ol WinME, I like to think of it as Win98SE+- (plus, minus). Plus minus because you get more crashes, more BSDs, minus because you get less functionality and it generally sucks. Kris 0 #29 January 4, 2002 Pammi,Morpheus, Audiogalaxy, and Limewire are good tools. Or, if you want to pick up a 30GB drive, I'll give you a copy of my MP3 collection to hold for me as an "off-site backup". Also, can anyone help me find the woman I've attached a picture of? I just need her and 15-minutes...Kris

Pammi 0 #31 January 4, 2002 ROFL Kris! Yeah, you're gonna have to get in line on that girl I think! 30 GB...hmmm...not a chance! :) So question for you nerds....if I have WinME and someone happens to hook me up with WinXP...do I lose everything to switch over and if not, how does one go about doing so?? I don't have to re-format the HD again? Someone also mentioned to me that WinXP doesn't have DOS...that it was basically taken out of that version...is that something one would ever miss? I've gotten into the registry only once and only know very little about DOS cuz I don't want to REALLY screw up something...Closing pin jewelry
freeflir29 0 #32 January 4, 2002 "WinXP doesn't have DOS..."9X doesn't either but are you saying no emulation at all?"I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
Pammi 0 #33 January 4, 2002 Nice pic btw :) Um, I don't know...heard that it was totally nixed outta of the version, but being the non-computer-nerd...don't know what that implies, if anything, and the person who told me isn't much more computer savvy then myself. Ya know, he heard it from someone who heard from sort of a thing probably.Closing pin jewelry
freeflir29 0 #34 January 4, 2002 I don't see why you would need the emulation really. If you aren't terribly computer savvy you don't need it anyway. You should still have access to the registry through "regedit" which is not DOS. Win 9X just has a DOS emulation program. To be in true DOS you have to select it during the boot. Pammi 0 #35 January 4, 2002 Aaahhh...I see. Now Merrick prob'ly would know more about this, but I personally stay away from it except in extreme circumstances because I would rather not delete something I can't reverse. Closing pin jewelry
scottbre 0 #36 January 4, 2002 I wouldn't bet my life on it, but I am pretty sure that win9x has full DOS commands available."Can't keep my mind from the circling sky. Tongue-tied & twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I."
freeflir29 0 #37 January 4, 2002 "I would rather not delete something I can't reverse"You can always just print the page in case whatever you change doesn't work out. Then it's easy to put back...."I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
Pammi 0 #38 January 4, 2002 duh...lolhowever, is it possible to mess it up so badly you can't get back into it at all?Closing pin jewelry
freeflir29 0 #39 January 4, 2002 "I am pretty sure that win9x has full DOS commands available."They are but it's not really DOS that you're in. It's a DOS emulation program. Looks like it....but it's running inside windows and converting the language as you type....."I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
scottbre 0 #40 January 4, 2002 But is it the emulation program, if you run the command.com from your start menu?..."Can't keep my mind from the circling sky. Tongue-tied & twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I."
freeflir29 0 #41 January 4, 2002 Unless you choose DOS instead of windows at start up....you're in windows....."I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
lummy 4 #42 January 4, 2002 Win9x/ME runs on top of DOS. At startup you basically start command.com and then win.com. Clay is right in a sense that it is emulated. Windows creates a Virtual machine when you type in command.NT/2000/XP is a different story tho. With those OS's you have to load the little hamster to get the wheel turning first.Command line will never go away

lummy 4 #45 January 7, 2002 So true....Then again, there is a LOT of functionality from command line. Can you ping or tracert from GUI? Can you stop and start services in a batch file?
