riggerrob 643 #13 January 6, 2002 Ask any magazine editor and she will tell you that the same articles have to be re-visited every couple of years for the new readers. With the short attention spans of e-chatters this may be every two months or every two weeks. We should continue to rehash old debates so newbies can learn from our mistakes.Mind you, there are a few things that I did as a newbie that I refuse to teach to newbies, like jumping faded, frayed and filthy military surplus static line round parachutes with Capewells that are rusted shut! billvon 3,095 #20 January 6, 2002 >is it just me or do we rehash stupid debates all the time? how many jumps? rsl or no rsl? cypres or not? (etc)Well, I think we do, but in our case the outcome is more important than what most people talk about (i.e. whether the Giants are going to win the game tonight, which is also the same stupid debate time after time.) If you don't have a Cypres, and you need one, the lack of it might just kill you. I think such things are worth discussing, since they're literally life and death. And as boring as they seem after a while, the sport is growing like crazy, so a quarter of the people who see this argument may never have even thought about it before. Their student rig had an RSL, their rig now has an RSL, so of course everyone uses RSL's. They may never even consider the issue until they see (or hear) their first RSL argument. I can't count the number of times that I've suggested someone make a hop-and-pop with no extra gear - no altimeter, cypres, RSL, jumpsuit etc - and seen the wheels in their head start spinning. "Wait, I need an altimeter - but I guess I'm going to open right away. Do I still need one? What about setting up to land? Do I _need_ an altimeter for that? What if mine breaks?" Whether they make the jump or not, at least they think about what they need (and rely on.)If nothing else, these endless arguments get people thinking. Maybe we could have a forum where 90% of the participants are post-bots, that just post the same arguments (with the same standard replies and objections) over and over again. Newbies would get the benefit of seeing all the sides, and we could save the main forum for more important topics like BDSM fantasies or dirty jokes.-bill von

indyz 1 #24 January 7, 2002 QuoteAMEN, brotha! PREACH ON!!I mean come on. When you've already got your hands on the keyboard, how can typing commands be cumbersome?Whoa, I'm sorry I brought this up. I've actually been using jed for the last two years or so. Tons of builtin syntax highlighting, powerful built in scripting (and not in Lisp, thank god). Plus, you can change the keybindings. I started out in vi mode, then switched to Emacs bindings because they are faster.--Brianperl -e '$i=14500;while($i>2500){sleep($d);$d=5;print"$i\n";$i-=1000}print"Pull!\n"'
