Zennie 0 #1 January 7, 2002 OK this is *totally* not skydiving related but I just had to comment on it....The GoodVery sweet, low profile design. The whole thing takes up less space than my CRT monitor. Me likes flat panels. The Bad700 Mz processor/128M RAM/40G HD. Huh? My 2 year old (underpowered) PC has that configuration. Maybe better, now that I think of it (600 Mz K6, 512M RAM, 30G HD, 64M GeForce 3).The Ugly~ $1500 to own a system with The Bad's specs. The RantI'm convinced Apple just doesn't get it. They're going back to their old model of overcharging for a closed/proprietary system that doesn't really offer any advantage over a PC system other than "cuteness". I don't pay for Cute, I pay for power.Hell for $1500, I could build a monster PC system that runs Linux and Windoze. One that's almost twice the specs of the iMac and runs everything that runs on the Apple platform.I still think OS X is a great idea (haven't played with it enough to know if they implemented it well), but heck Linux has several window managers that are every bit as nice... and runs more software."Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense." jfields 0 #2 January 7, 2002 Zennie,Yeah, I saw a blurb on that computer go by. I laughed. They really, really don't get it. Some small percentage of clueless yuppies will cough up the ridiculous price and get a stylish computer. Everyone else will spend half the money and get something that actually does more. One of the features that was pumped about the new Apples was that they are fanless and quiet. Um... So was the ill-fated Cube thingie they tried to pawn off on people. Once burned, lets stick our fingers in the fire again.. and again... and again. Before some of the Mac die-hards start flaming me, I'll outright concede the fact that Macs are better video editing and such. But come on, does more than like 2 percent of the population actually do that stuff? For the average user, Macs are just overpriced and inferior, so they don't buy Macs. They buy "Wintel" boxes from their vendor of choice. The only reason Apple is still in business is the pathological illness that holds the loyal to their brand. When the blinders come off, people never buy Apples again. There, that should inflame "the faithful". JustinMy HomepagePS The specs look kinda like a $450 Celeron box from Dell, other than the screen.

wildblue 7 #4 January 7, 2002 Quote $1500 to own a system with The Bad's specs. The display is probably 75% of the total cost there. Just something to keep in mind if you want to compare to similar priced Dell/Gateway/whatever - price it with a flat screen.I ain't happy, I'm feeling gladI got sunshine, in a bag
AggieDave 6 #5 January 7, 2002 You can get a 15" viewable TFT for right around $300, so...I went to a Grateful Dead Concert and they played for SEVEN hours. Great song. -- Fred Reuss
jfields 0 #6 January 7, 2002 Dave,Right. That does kinda leave the new Macs overpriced by about a factor of 2. JustinMy Homepage
wildblue 7 #7 January 8, 2002 QuoteYou can get a 15" viewable TFT for right around $300, so...Right, but I thought we were in "AppleLand" where everything's over priced. A decent sony is like $350 - $450 (depends where you look) an Apple 15" by itself is $600. I wasn't really arguing the value, just pointing out that Apple overcharges for everything equally.I ain't happy, I'm feeling gladI got sunshine, in a bag

AggieDave 6 #9 January 8, 2002 God, you've got to love Apple, if they wouldn't have shot themselves in the foot with price and limiting development of hardware/software back in the late 80s, they would be king of the world today. AggieDave 6 #11 January 8, 2002 When I was working at an ISP doing tech support, someone called me and asked if they could connect their Apple IIGs to the 'net. I responded with: "well, I've got some duct tape, I could tape it to the server..." I dont' think they appreciated my humor, since they hung up on me. I have an original Bondi Blue iMac that I had given to my brother. He didn't use it, so when I took it back I spent about a day trying to figure out what the heck to do with it. Finally installed Yellow Dog Linux on it and now it's my webserver.I have KDE on it, but it's slow as molassess so I pretty much stay logged off and let it just serve web pages. AggieDave 6 #19 January 9, 2002 Anyone remember Osborne "portable" computers? I have a couple of the Osborne Executive models in the closet. imdskydiver 0 #20 January 9, 2002 Processor speed is over rated. Is a 400 mhz pentium P111 processor faster than a 400 mhz Pentium P1 processor, You bet it is ! The same holds true for Mac's , Why are Mac's better at Graphics ? Could it be that they process graphics faster !
AggieDave 6 #21 January 9, 2002 If I remember correctly, it has to do more with how the Cache is implimented on the Die of the Processor. The Motorola processors that Macs use have a faster caching setup for the processor then most x86 processors until recently. Same for the AMD, that's why an AMD Atholon 1.6Ghz runs neck and neck with a P4 2.0Ghz.Please correct me if I'm wrong. Zennie 0 #24 January 9, 2002 On-board cache will definitely make a difference. The math coprocessor will also have an influence, especially when it comes to math-intensive operations such as graphics. IIRC, the G4s have AltiVec, which is supposed to have some serious number-crunching abilities.I still have my doubts that a 700 Mz G4 can outperform a 1.4Gz Athlon (which runs around $115 according to sharkyextreme)... especially if I slap that on a mobo that supports DDR RAM.In fact, here are the specs in Sharky's "Value" gaming system...AMD Athlon System Case: Enlight 7230 Case-$50Processor: AMD Athlon XP 1600+-$114Cooling: Thermosonic ThermoEngine-$26Mainboard: EPoX EP-8KHA+-$102RAM: 128 MB PC2100 DDR-$13Hard Drive: 40GB IBM Deskstar ATA-100 7200 RPM-$99Video Card : Gainward GeForce2 Ti 64 MB-$117Monitor: LG Electronics Flatron 17" 795FT Plus / Samsung 19" 950P-$235Sound Card: SoundBlaster Live! AggieDave 6 #25 January 9, 2002 No offense, but there are some much better motherboards for an AMD system out there. For instance: Abit KR7A-RAID and the AsusTek A7V266-E--RAID. Both are really great higher end boards for the AMD XPs and both overclock really easy. Put that in a Lian-Li aluminum case (actually does help with cooling), with a 530watt power supply, water cool the processor(since it's overclocked) and put a good 'ol GeForce 3 64mb-DDR video card, 1.5gb of DDR ram...hmmmm. Lets see a Mac keep up with something like that...aint gonna happen.Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.-General George Patton-
