Wingsuit Insanity

Recommended Posts

On page 4 of the Jan 02 issue of Skydiving there is the following report:
"On the 28th of October, I intentionally flew a wingsuit between the guy wires of a 1,600-foot antenna - at about 200 feet AGL," says BASE jumper Dwain Weston. "Deployment was commenced immediately after passing through the wires, with cell pressurization reached at about 20 feet AGL"
Does anyone else think that this is:
1. believeable
2. insane

I'll preface this by saying I have yet to personally make any base jumps, ie, I don't know much about base jumping....LOL With that said, I've heard 1) base canopies have a much shorter snivel than a skydiving main, 2) a winged suit base jump would slow down the fall rate significantly, ie 200 ft above ground level deployment going 120mph would be fatal, but I'm assuming it might be possible to deploy a base chute within that altitude if the wing suit had slowed the fall rate enough (can't birdmen slow their fall rates to like 60mph?). So, there you have it, in my totally uneducated opinion, I would say that "yes" I think it's probably possible to do that. I'd never think of even trying it, but I guess alot of our sport is about pushing limits, right?

Also have you checked out the wingsuit flight by Jean Loic (?)...on Crosswind..... he dumps out waylow........ even nicer work!!...........
Check out some BASE vids like Beyond Xtreme you will see many people (Aussies mainly) pressurizing at sub 100ft !!......... dont it give you a hard on?!?!?! ..... ;op
Also Dwain is the guy who did a double gainer from 180ft....... so why not believe he dumps at 200ft with a wingsuit......???

I knew Dwaine Weston was a shit-hot base jumper, but didn't know he was an experienced wingsuit flyer too - I think I read somewhere once that he reached 1000 base jumps without having NEARLY as many skydives. Different sport, different buzz I suppose.

Check out www.Headdown.net in the 2001 film festival there's a group of BASE jumpers that made a movie where they jump from a 16 floor of a building. Now that's low..... It's call Thanks for the coffee. The tiltle is written in swede on the web site. The only thing i remember in the title is "Kaffe" Cool shoot though.

it's his death the crazy SOB! A wing suit does slow you down a little but not enough to keep you alive when you do a belly slide on the ground. Come to think of it, I'd pay money to watch someone attempt a belly landing using one. On land or water I doesn't mater to me.:)Why dont we get drunk and screw.:)

10 ft per floor? Is that about right? That seems about the height from floor to suspended ceiling. There's another 2 ft or so usually between that and I'd guess at least a foot thickness for the floor.
Is there a BASE way to estimate height?
